Education Software that Supports Internationalization?

valluvar9000 asks: "I recently was able to talk a local secondary school (public) into letting me convert their existing computer systems (not in use and in storage) into a LTSP based setup. They are OK with it as long as it does not cost them money. However the whole solution needs to be deployed in the local language (Tamil) as the medium of instruction is not English. Fortunately Tamil (TSCII & Unicode) support is widely available and quite mature on KDE and GNOME. Can Slashdot help with the selection of good educational tools (Maths, Science, General problem solving and any other topic of interest) that are GUI based (KDE preferably) and internationalizable (this is important)? The target ages are between 6 years to 12 years."

K12LTSP is a great distro built for what you are talking about... At least some of the packages they include should be internationalizable.

LingoTeach is a fully internationalized multimedia language instruction tool. It's not yet translated to Tamil yet, though.

It has about 900 words and can teach Spanish, English and German with sound.

It can teach some 15 other languages too, but has no sound. It's fully Unicode based (data and localisation).

I'll of course plug my own project, GraphThing.

It's a GTK-based program that has its own i18n/l10n functionality (mainly because I don't like how gettext is designed) for investigating graph theoretic mathematics.

Please take a look at Skolelinux. Several multilinugual programs are bundeled with this Linux distribution for schools, and more will be added soon.

The project has in fact also been in touch with the people behind Tamilnet, which is also based in Oslo, Norway.

    Good luck!

This CD is an excellent add on to any LTSP based school. For example, teacher can use it at home to prepare exercise without having to install GNU/Linux at home)
