Wiring A Vintage Teletype To The Internet
An anonymous reader writes "Do you have an old teletype with a 5-bit serial interface sitting around that you've been itching to hook up to the Internet? If so, this article at LinuxDevices.com is just what you've been looking for. Henry Minsky has caught the Mini-ITX motherboard bug big-time, arguing that the tiny, yet full-featured boards can now compete favorably with more traditional embedded platforms." Minsky explains that: "Messages and alerts could be printed to the teletype automatically from remote locations (such as our Yahoo calendar), while a user could send messages and access services such as weather and news headlines from the teletype keyboard."
god bless all the people with to much time on there hands for they provide many hours of entertaniamt reading about them. "hey lets make a beowolf cluster of atari 2600's! why? Becouse WE CAN!"
A new and very dangerous virus has been released by some sick individual. However, this virus only affects machine's running Linux. Both Linux Torvalds and Allen Cox have said this as a vary serious virus, and their is no known cure. In the worst cases, other people might be able to remotely control you're PC and even other hardware it is controlling, such as you're toaster and radiator's. It is even possable that they could kill you're CD's while you are listening to them, or make telephone call's using you're line.
/
To find out if you're machine is infected, open a X term, and type
cd
This will take you to the "root" directory. Now you must type
ls -a
Look for a file called "vmlinuz". If you do not see this file, it probably means your safe. But, jsut to make sure, you should type
ssh 127.0.0.1
Then you might be asked for a login and a password, on some systems maybe jsut a password, so type in you're own login ((it it aksed you for it)), and you're ususl password. If you get a bash prompt, press ctrl-D at once!!! it means your 0WN3D!!! because you're own login and password worked on the remote machine, 127.0.0.1 what belong to the l337 h4xor d00d'z, so they have to have a copy of every one's machine they have 0wn3d on there's, and as a ersult, you can check to see if your 0wn3d by tyring you're own login and passeword in their boxen.
To get rid of the virus, you first need to unplug the machine from the network. Now delete the file "vmlinuz". You may have to be "root" to do this, just type
su
((you may get aksed for you're root password)) and you should get the # prompt. Now type
rm -f vmlinuz
You're machine still probably will not be totally free of virus. But without this file on your machine, the h4x0r'z who are all using 127.0.0.1 for there nefarious purpose's, wo'nt be bale to hack you're pc.
THIS IS A REAL WARNING! If you fine the vmlinuz file in your / directory, you probably are 0wn3d! If you're login and password works on 127.0.0.1, you definitely are 0wn3d! These peopel are sick and twisted and need to have something done with them before they do some real damage.
However, with only smelly, comunist hippy's being affected, it is unlikely that they WILL be bale to do any real damage.
