WIPO Pressured to Kill Meeting on Open Source

panthan writes "The Washington Post has has an article about a proposed meeting of the WIPO concerning open source having been removed from consideration, apparently due to pressure from the US State Department and the USPTO. 'In short order, lobbyists from Microsoft-funded trade groups were pushing officials at the State Department and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to squelch the meeting. One lobbyist, Emery Simon with the Business Software Alliance, said his group objected to the suggestion in the proposal that overly broad or restrictive intellectual-property rights might in some cases stunt technological innovation and economic growth.'" Lawrence Lessig has some comments.

    1. Who is this FAQ intended for?

Victims of so-called "modbombing", which DOES NOT EXIST.

    2. What is modbombing?
"Modbombing" (which doesn't exist) is the name for a mythical series of moderations that result in several moderations of a user's comment in a negative fashion.

    3. Why would anyone make up something as silly as that?

This is a myth invented and perpetuated by known serial trollers. They even claim that "rouge editors" "modbomb" entire threads of comments. Which is obviously a false myth, once again.

    4. If modbombing doesn't exist, why did you stop taking the time off messages sent telling you that you received moderations?

To save bandwidth. Obviously, on a sinking ship like OSDN is, the eliminating of 6 characters from a message saves about two bucks a quarter, which lets us order Cowboy Neal a pizza every 10 years approximately. Someday (in approximately 50 years for our retirement party) we are optimistic we will be able to afford a party pizza for Neal and one for the rest of the editors. Unfortunately, whatever toppings we agree on micheal insists he doesn't like.

    6. Why should we care?

    SUBCRIBE. WE'RE POOR.

    7. I was under the impression that if we subscribed, half the promised features don't work.

    Another lie perpetuated by trolls.

    8. You're a little paranoid about the trolls, aren't you?

NO, we must defend ourselves against them by any means possible, even if it means a 72 hour IP ban for receiving 5 negative moderations.
