Fastest US Supercomputer Runs Linux

jgercken writes "The Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has brought online a 11.8 teraflops supercomputer based on the Linux operating system, comprised of ~2,000 Itanium processors, and assembled by HP. Touted to be the fastest unclassified computer in the US, its main duties will be atmospheric chemistry, systems biology, catalysis and materials science."

I actually would rather BSD for my servers. But it seems Linux is much more flexible when it comes to needs.. BSD might be (in my opinion) solid.. but I just don't see it conforming to the needs..

Hmmmm. A computer running me eh.. That's a nasty mental picture.

I see the FORMER bofh running from a weird rolling server case that opens and shuts the tape drive flap while saying over the PC speaker "THATS THE LAST TIME YOU RM -RF ME!!!" while firing raid, ZIP, cd's, and floppies at high speeds. You'd also notice the interns being dragged by the dangling ethernet cable. Oh, and add the MAC frownly face on the screen.

And they put the stuff about biological research on the front page of the site too. Folks, this is a nuclear materials factory that's been a nuclear materials factory from the time when nobody knew you should be careful with radioactive material, through the time when national priorities didn't give us time to be careful with radioactive material, right up to the present, when the corporations and bombmongers have decided that it's not profitable to be careful with radioactive materials. This is no place to go near if you value your DNA. But it's all being marketed so professionally by the same people who renamed the million acres or so of oblivion left over after many nuclear explosions the "Nevada National Research Park!" Hey, GI George, go be a park ranger there.
