Universities Taken Offline to Fight Worms, Viruses
chrismg2003 writes "Nationwide universities are opening their doors to new students but closing off their network services. The Blaster worm has caused universities to take drastic actions to protect their campus networks. Universities have gone as far as shutting down their entire resnet network and bringing it back up dorm-by-dorm after each computer has been certified worm-free. The ICMP ping requests alone have brought down my university's resnet multiple times and we are scrambling to clean the worm from all computers before it forces us to follow suit with other universities."
I realize I might be wasting my time by saying this, but I can't hold it in any longer.
I am apalled at the amount of time that is wasted in these "troll" discussions. If even ten people reply to an obvious troll, each spending an average of two minutes to make a thoughtful reply, then twenty minutes of time is wasted. At an average slashdotter's pay of 35$ per hour, that's 11.67$ piddled away forever. Assuming 1% of Slashdot's readership each take a minute to read these useless discussions at -1, there goes another 46,000$ down the can. Now multiply that value with number of troll posts you see on the average front page article. Frightening, isn't it? I ask, who is going to pick up the tab for all this spent time?
I can't believe I'd be the first person to propose a "Slashdot Troll Tax", but perhaps I am the first with the balls to publicly discuss it. It's easy. Every tech company with DBAs, programmers, system administrators, etc. that read Slashdot shall take a small percentage (10%) off each worker's paycheque to compensate for the lost time.
I've alerted friends in powerful positions at other fortune 500 companies about these so-called slashdot "trolls". Just remember when you get your check that this isn't a punishment to any particular individuals, it is just a natural consequence of the growing non-work geek activity during work hours. Just the cost of doing business, and the cost of your "privilege" to use the internet to read Slashdot.
...to be you right now.
I know this is offtopic, but.... This is the funnest picture of Bush I've seen yet. Nope, Bush isn't showing off his dog's knowledge of rolling over.. the guy dropped the dog. The best part is, it's not a photoshopped from the fine folks of The Onion.
