Metal Gear Solid GC Enhancements Discussed
Thanks to IGN Cube for their new interview with Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack about Metal Gear Solid:The Twin Snakes, as he talks about this Winter 2003-due GameCube 'enhanced port' of the original MGS, including overall changes ("...one of the biggest enhancements is the ability to do all of the things you could do in Metal Gear Solid 2 in the Metal Gear Solid 1 world... there are all sorts of different [new] ways to finish a level"), AI upgrades ("...totally ramped up. I think it's safe to say that if you look at the AI from MGS2 then we're at [MGS] 2 and a half now"), and the Metal Gear Solid 2/VR Missions bonus rumors ("There will be extras, but there won't be another game in there.")
"...we all talked together as a group, and we decided that the best thing to do was to not include GBA support and instead make the game as best as it can be."
Hell yeah. To be honest, I don't really buy into the whole "Nintendo is evil because they make me buy a GBA for FF:CC" crap-- I mean, I already have all the stuff, and I bought the link cable for Animal Crossing anyway. But to see a developer say "well, yeah, that's gimmicky, so we're not going to do it"-- that kinda hurts the overall image of GBA support. I have no doubt in my mind that GBA support works-- just not for all games. What could they really do with Twin Snakes GBA support that would enhance the gameplay? Radar? No, because the PSX version had it on-screen and it's very dangerous to take your eyes off the screen during a firefight. Inventory? The shoulder-button configuration was the most streamlined inventory I've ever used, and I wouldn't want that to change. Additionally, if you do have GBA support, you have to reduce the complexity of the controls, and with a game as intricate as MGS that's simply not possible.
Oh, and for what it's worth, I hate IGN's interview style-- "Can't you tell us something you explicitly said you can't tell us? Come on! Pleeeeeze?"
"Why Subscribe?" Good question...
Will we still be able to fill the enemy's head full of needles?
I find it interesting that the GC is, essentially, getting a 6-7 year old PS1 title, and that's somehow cutting edge gaming news.
Really, it's no different then when Hasbro went through a spate of "upgrading" a bunch of old arcade titles like Pacman.
I actually feel sorry for GC owners on this. I mean PS2 got MGS2. XB and PC got MGS2: Substance (which was the original game with a TON of other stuff added. Sadly, you can only get it legally on DVD for the PC)... And then Gamecube gets a remake of MGS.
Doesn't seem right... I'm a Playstation fan, but I'm not a console evangelist.
I agree that it's not really cutting edge news, but I'm fairly excited about it. I've been playing MGS2 Substance on the PS2 lately and love it. I've actually been considering going out and picking up a cheap copy of MGS to play again, but I would much rather play through an updated version.
So long as you don't feel obligated to get every edition of the game I think it's fine. I wouldn't bother getting MGS2 Substance for the Cube since I already have it, but I am interested in MGS.
"one of the biggest enhancements is the ability to do all of the things you could do in Metal Gear Solid 2 in the Metal Gear Solid 1 world" Will I get to play a long haired estrogen imbalanced boy who get's his crotch grabbed by the president?
I just feel sorry for the GC owners. They seem to be getting gipped lately. I saw further down the games page here on the dot that Eidos is quitting releasing for the GC.
NO MORE TOMB RAIDER FOR YOU GC TYPES! I'm sure you're all heartbroken:)
Yeah and I was so looking forward to all the games Eidos were gonna release...oh wait, Tomb Raider? No thanks
You'll see that the bosses have a stun gague now, so I would think that means that the M9 (or some other tranquilizer gun) would be there.
Well, if you'd played Eternal Darkness, you'd be excited too.
Way back when, Silicon Knights did the original Legacy of Kain. The story rocked, the game itself was so-so. Nintendo steps in, guides them through the development of Eternal Darkness -- lo-and-behold -- story rocks, gameplay rocks.
Here, we've got Silicon Knights, Nintendo (Miyamoto), and Konami (Kojima) collaborating on a remake to what was originally a pretty good game on crappy hardware. Hell yeah I'm looking forward to it.
