Initial Half-Life 2 Benchmarks Released

dfj225 writes "According to an article on ExtremeTech.com, it looks like ATI has the lead in Half-Life 2 graphics card performance. Valve benchmarked their new game using the top cards from both ATI and nVidia. Results show the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro drawing around 60 FPS while the nVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra only draws around 30 in Half-Life 2's DX9 full precision tests. Read the article to see results on other tests that Valve ran." Update: 09/11 13:06 GMT by M : Another article about the presentation.

So... these ATI cards that now have the performance lead, do they have free drivers for Linux and X11?

A card that works reliably and is supported out-of-the-box by a free Linux distribution is (for many) preferable to a card that doesn't have drivers or requires some binary-only junk to be loaded into kernel space.

If this is just 'Card X (which has no free driver) beat Card Y (which has no free driver) in some gaming benchmark', I fail to see the interest.

1600 X 1200? jesus, you must love TINY LITTLE PEOPLE on your screen. Along with TINY LITTLE GUNS and TINY LITTLE OBJECTS in game.

I very rarely play any game higher than 1024 X 768 becuase anything higher than that gets you nothing. There's no advantage to running games in super high res's. It's just something poeple brag about who think their systems are 733t.
