No Americans Need Apply

Victor G. Sommers writes "Daniel Soong, who lost his programming job to Indian offshore companies, is willing to relocate to India. 'It would be really interesting to work in Bangalore,' he says. 'But I was told, "Daniel, it is against the law for you to work here. You can come here on vacation, but you can't work here."' Indian officials have told him they don't hire Americans." An article in ComputerWorld talks about the possibility of getting more than you bargained for in outsourced code.

What are you talking about? Europeans are everwhere in America, and I don't mean white-bread European-descended Americans (European Americans) either. They are in the universities and in the job market. The U.S. is not the problematic party in terms of open job opportunities. It is the European Union's cradle-to-the-grave mentality for their job market that prohibits better agreements. In truth, there should be free trade and free job opportunities between the U.S., our subsidiary named Canada, and the European Union. While Britain would most likely sign on in a heartbeat (the Scottish National Party would complain though), the other backward viewing countries, ahem "member (nation) states" like Germany and France (especially) wouldn't.

Granted, some of you are probably directly benefiting from this work visa scam, and some (notably European) individuals just like to see the U.S. suffer regardless of the circumstances, but whats everyone else's excuse?!?

How can anyone genuinely not see a problem with a country denying work to U.S. citizens, while at the same time injecting millions of its own workers into an already hurting U.S. economy? How much money do you think flows out of the U.S. economy and into friggin India because of these workers sending their money home? (Oh and thanks guys, for letting us sponser your children and for allowing us to come there on vacation and hand over more of our currency).

And what is this nonsense about work visas being difficult to get? Take a stroll through Silicon Valley or Detroit or Miami sometime, chief. Although large portions of each have many legal citizens and illegals, millions are here just on these work visas. Hard to get, bah.

Much hilarity ensued when I read that potential candidates for work visas must prove to some mickey mouse rubber-stamp entity that they can do something that an American can't, or do it better in some regard. I would love to read some applications, just to hear how their U.S. employer sponser justifies this nonsense. And apparently this policy doesn't apply to medical professionals. I've worked with literally hundreds of visa-ed MDs who were simply horrible and inept at all aspects of their profession. And what about that phone tech support guy that we all need an interpreter for? If he listed "pissing customers the f--- off" as a skill he can do better than you or I, then I guess the system works. Do it better, bah.

But lets cut to the chase. Money is the determining factor in this debate. Cheap labor, more profit, screw the American unemployed and screw civic duty.

In many periods of history, when the job market is bleak, anger turns towards immigrant workers, or any other "outsiders". (e.g. The misplaced anger of the "They come over here and take our jobs!" argument).

Hell, I don't blame them! Our anger should really be directed to whom it belongs - absurd legislators, bleeding-heart judges, and greedy corporations that are responsible for creating a political and social climate where these discrimantory, anti-American hiring practices can occur.

Free trade, global labor, whatever its called, its bad news for America. And don't give me the "Well America was made up of immigrants" routine...that was then, this now. We're all full up, try Canada. How can America continue to take in everyone that strolls accross a border or spends a few months obtaining some document? Can America continue to be a thriving economic force this way?
