Fulfilling the Promise of XML-based Office Suites?

brentlaminack asks: "Almost a year ago Tim Bray of XML fame said 'when the huge universe of MS Office documents becomes available for processing by any programmer with a Perl script and a bit of intelligence, all sorts of wonderful new things can be invented that you and I can't imagine.' Now that MS has dropped the ball on the XML Office front, and StarOffice has fulfilled its XML promise, where are all those 'wonderful new things?' Is anybody out there writing Perl/Java/whatever programs to take advantage of StarOffice XML? Could this be an opportunity for Free/Open/Libre software to leapfrog MS Office in real productivity as XML proponents have promised all along?" What kinds of new and wonderful things can you come up with?

I remember when I was young, we never even imagined such a thing as cell phones. Most people didn't even think the durned telephone would catch on! Who needs that thing, they would say -- you'll talk to people when you go in to town for your groceries! If someone needs to talk to you, why the heck wouldn't they just come over and talk?
Sometimes we needed help, no crazy telephone option, you just had to go get whoever it was who ya needed the help from!
These days most people have the phones in their house, some people even have TWO phones! Not me, I still say if you need somethin outta me come an ask for it. I've got the phone, but mostly since they said I *had* to have it in case of emergencies! HA!

I think the people doing these star offices should think about that before they go off and start creating new applications for these typesetting whathaveyous. I have a feeling these telephone gadgets ARE going to catch on, so why not jump on the wave early and be prepared!
When I was in the boy scouts that was one of our mottos, among other things. "Be prepared, always be honest, but the scout meetings are always secret and you shouldn't talk about them!" I had some good times in the scouts alright.

Take it from me, there's no time like the present!
