Replacing the Aging Init Procedure on Linux

OSNews has more details on the project, directly from Seth. The new Python-based approach will make booting faster and it will talk to the D-BUS daemon, freedesktop.org's leading project. And speaking of freedesktop.org, it is important to mention the release of HAL 0.1, an implementation of a hardware abstraction layer for KDE, XFce and Gnome, based on a proposal by freedesktop.org's founder Havoc Pennington and being implemented by David Zeuthen. It is innovative projects like Storage, SystemServices and HAL that can bring the kind of integration to the underlying system that current X11 desktop environments lack."

Apparently the source code was stolen when Gabe Newell was distracted with 4 dozen donuts, which he ate in about 5 seconds but it was long enough for somebody to swipe the code. Also Gabe ate everybody's lunch at Valve, 3 PCs, an intern, and a VW bug before he was brough under control.
No doubt Penny Arcade will have a humorless and confusing cartoon about this within the next year or so.
Blues News is also reporting that Gabe underwent a blood transfusion last year, replacing his blood with cooking oil and melted ice cream.
A more important question, how do they get FP doing that crap?

This feature has been available for a long time. If you use gdm, run gdmconfig as root, and in the "general" tab, check the box labeled "Login a user automatically on first bootup", and select a username from the dropdown box.
I'm sure kdm has similar features.
