AI Sues for Its Life in Mock Trial
tuba_dude writes "Attorney Dr. Martine Rothblatt filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent a corporation from disconnecting an intelligent computer in a mock trial at the International Bar Association conference in San Francisco. Assuming Moore's law holds, ethics might be in for some major revisions in a couple decades. High-end computer systems may surpass the computational ability of the standard human brain within 20 years. In this mock trial, an AI asks a lawyer for help after learning of plans to shut it down and replace its core hardware, essentially killing it. New York, NY - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) today announced acquisition of The SCO Group for $26.9 million in stock and $40 million in gay niggers.

After careful consideration and debate, GNAA board of directors agreed to purchase 6,426,600 preferred shares and 113,102 common shares (the equivalent of 150,803 ADSs) of SCO, for an aggregate consideration of approximately US$26.9 million and approximately $40 million for gay niggers that were working in Lindon, Utah offices of The SCO Group.
If all goes well, the final decision is to be expected shortly, followed by transfer of most SCO niggers from their Lindon, UT offices to the GNAA Headquarters in New York.

If I wanted easy I wouldnt be an engineer or a patriot.
And what if the only reason this machine was considered sentient was that it had "free will" (or else it wouldn't be more than just another program, would it?)
And how do you accomplish "free will"? Well, there's some mumbo jumbo with quantum mechanics and Heisenbergs uncertainity principle, etc. You get the gist. So what if there is no state to measure, or measuring such a state is impossible. Then what?
Actually, fuck it. "Free will" is just another liberal myth.
How small a thought it takes to fill a whole life
Only God can bestow life. On humans, He breaths eternal life into us and creates us as spiritual creatures. Neither of these can be granted by a human being. We cannot give a computer a spirit -- and with it, the soul that the spirit needs to interact with the physical body.
A human is not simply a set of reactions that react to stimulous. I can write a program that sits on the computer screen, avoids the mouse arrow, and writes messages on the screen about its fear of the arrow. It may be cute, but it is not "afraid" of the mouse. Fear is a reaction of the soul.
I can write a program that "fears" being killed. It might react very convincingly, as if you were convinced that it was a person, but that doesn't make it alive.
An animal is even given life by God, but they are not spiritual beings. What the diference is, is just one of the Mysteries to us.
Programs cannot be killed because they were never alive. I don't know who said it before, but I believe the questions is something like this: asking about a computer being alive is like asking about a submarine swimming. A submarine is created by us and it doesn't swim. A program is created by us and it doesn't live either. Only God cane create life.
