Take Two/Rockstar Announce GTA Sales, Plans

Thanks to GameGossip for their coverage of a Take Two financial conference presentation in which the company revealed details on its software sales and plans. The company's Rockstar Games subsidiary has now, astoundingly, sold "over 25 million units" of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, and "over 20 million" of those were from GTA3 and Vice City alone. Looking forward, the company's financial officers mentioned the November 19th release of GTA developer Rockstar North's gory Manhunt as a highlight, and also noted that "mid-2004 would see the release of The Warriors from Rockstar", as based on Walter Hill's cult gang movie. Finally, the next iteration of Grand Theft Auto, name as yet unknown, "will ship during late 2004."

What would be cool is a totally free form GTA game, where instead of there being a story as such you start of with nothing (I suppose similar to the others) but you can basically make your own way to 0wning the city, by taking over various neighbourhoods, hiring gangs to patrol your areas, getting involved in turf wars etc.

This would also present the opportunity for multiplayer where, say, you and a friend start at either end of the town and slowly build up your empire while trying to undermine / take over the other guy. You could even do it co-op, where you have 2 per side so one of you could handle running the operation while the other runs covert ops against the other side.

Anyway, I think there's lots of possiblity for something like this.. maybe include a few cities with the time you save on not having to do all the scripted mission stuff.. maybe a random city generator? It wouldn't be as nice as a hand created city but you could still get something quite reasonable.

    Yeah, that'd be a game i'd play :)

Some friends of mine were designing a title just like you described, only multiplayer was a requirement, and some people could play as the cops instead. Cops would work together to take down the crime syndicates run by other players. The option would be open for player Cops to be crooked, and give false tip-offs and be paid off by the mob. While the other side tried to spread their crime ring by the usual illegal means, and not get caught. Players caught would have to serve time in a penalty box similar to Q3 Arena's Jailbreak mod, but could be sprung by other players, including crooked cops paid to free them.

It would be loads of fun if done correctly, though the game is surely not being made now. Hopefully someone else picks the idea up. (Hint, hint).

Proving once again that OMM really had a time machine and weren't just fucking around, a quote from way back in 1999:
American game developers are too chickenshit to touch a violent, button pushing property like The Warriors. I guess they're afraid it might inspire fights outside Electronics Boutique. Fine, we say, make your goddamn KISS games. We'll see you in bankruptcy court.

It's not an American game dev bringing us hot Warrior vs. Mime vs. Baseball Gang action, since Rockstar North is based out of Edinburgh.
    I can't wait.

Actually, although it's not Rockstar North doing The Warriors, it's Rockstar Vancouver, I believe - but they're still a non-American game developer, so the point is still good, heh.
