Netcraft Claims Apache Now Runs 2/3rds Of The Web
Mr Bill writes "According to NetCraft the Apache web server now owns over 2/3rds of the web. The jump of 2.8% since last month is mostly due to a number of large domain parking sites switching back to Apache from IIS. 'During 2001 and the first half of 2002 several companies hosting very large numbers of hostnames including Webjump, Namezero, Homestead, register.com and Network Solutions migrated to Microsoft-IIS. Subsequently these businesses have either failed, significantly changed their business model, or reverted to their previous platform, and Microsoft-IIS share is now in line with its long term pre-summer 2001 level of around 20%.' See the full report here."

Runs on IIS.
Our company has to run IIS for some propeitery bespoke ASP applications that don't currently work on any ASP emulators for linux. So we run IIS under wine for our backend which gets tunnelled through our J2EE Database (that uses mysql) that gets turned into PHP code that is served though our netbeans interface running on Apache.
Yes, ASP can be annoying, but for lots of companies, ASP is essential for the enterprise features J2EE and PHP currently lack.
How did we do it? Well we did what NERO corporation did (the people who make NERO burning rom), they have a howto on their site
Don't just single out Windows machines. There might be a higher proportion of Windows computers but remember Linux, OSX and MacOS Classic machines also ship with web servers, and the macos classic web server was written by none other than Microsoft.
bah humbug /. just aint entertaining anymore
oh well here

Are you on drugs?
One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered IIS community when IDC confirmed that IIS market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that IIS has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. IIS is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last [samag.com] in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.
You don't need to be a Kreskin [amdest.com] to predict IIS's future. The hand writing is on the wall: IIS faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for IIS because IIS is dying. Things are looking very bad for IIS. As many of us are already aware, IIS continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.
IIS is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time IIS developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: IIS is dying.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
IIS leader Bill Gates states that there are 7000 users of IIS. How many users of IIS are there? Let's see. The number of IIS versus IIS posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 IIS users. IIS/ASP posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of IIS posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of IIS/ASP. A recent article put IIS at about 80 percent of the IIS market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 IIS users. This is consistent with the number of IIS Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, IIS went out of business and was taken over by Sun who sell another troubled server. Now Sun is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major surveys show that IIS has steadily declined in market share. IIS is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If IIS is to survive at all it will be among server dilettante dbblers. IIS continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, IIS is dead.
Fact: IIS is dying
Mod parent's parent down! He doesn't have a valid point, AND WE DO NOT WANT TO HEAR THAT!
No classic Mac OS web servers are insecure EVER, becasue they do not ever have any exploitable holes according to the entire bugtraq database. not one defaced or rooted mac in entire internet history.
I am not talkign about OSX (unix), I am talking about classic current Mac OS 9.2.2 and older releases.
OpenBSD has had 5 defaul install exploitable holes, not counting apache defects. OpenBSD forget about 2 OpenSSH server bugs, one OpenSSH client bug, and 2 DNS client bugs! And anyway nobody uses an OS in its default install, once you add apache forget it! Forget to apply the numerous OpenBSD patches and your system will be haked, no remote exploit patches were ever needed for any version of classic (non-unix os x) mac OS ever in over 9 years.
This dumbass troll again - you used it three months ago and here it is again, seducing the unwary.
The US Army's only macintoshes, to my knowledge, are used by the art departments of various units.
If I suggested using a Macintosh web server, i'd be laughed out of the room and probably ultimately fired.
So much for the military using a Mac web server.
You need to stop smoking that stuff.
HBI's Law: Frequency of calling others Nazis is directly correlated with the likelihood of the accuser being Communist.
When a single proprietary system gains large market share this is considered unhealthy around these parts.
Now, an Open Source system gains an overwhelming market share, and this is considered a good thing??? Bubba is confused over why it is good Apache dominates the market over a large number if niche web servers, a few of which are very good web servers.
