New X Proposal on Freedesktop.org
Bytal writes "Havoc Pennington (of Red Hat and GNOME fame) seems to have a very interesting entry in his blog on the development of a new extension to the venerable X server going on at freedesktop.org. More specifically it seems to provide for most things that people have clamoring for (alpha blending, flicker-free window compositing and switching, as well as even OpenGL integration) without altering the existing X protocol too much."
Kill X and replace it with something simple, clean, extensible and lightweight. (All characteristics which X is not.) Then put a transparent X server on top of it for backwards compatibility. X is such a dinosaur, trying to extend it with all these modern features is like ricing up a Honda Civic.
If Pennington wants to make extensions to X
then let him go through the existing X community
and standards process. Gnome and/or Linux are
only a relatively small percentage of X users.
And for God sake don't let the GNOME/Gtk people
start changing X without some oversight from
people who *really* understand X. Remember,
Gtk was started by a guy who "wanted to learn
how to write a GUI". Yes, that's right, and boy
does it show.
