Microsoft Forgets To Renew Hotmail.co.uk
Saint Aardvark writes "The Register is reporting that Microsoft forgot to renew their hotmail.co.uk domain. A Good Samaritan renewed it for them, but was unable to get a response from anyone at Microsoft. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."
Hotmail runs on Windows 2000 servers. I have a secret for everyone. Linux does all their backend processing. Linux stores all hotmail in a single Mailbox file. When a user logs in, the mail program opens the file, locks it, and searchs the entire file for all emails to the user. This makes hotmail one of the most efficient web-based emails services because of the speed of reading that single Mailbox file.
