Sun To Build Opteron Servers
geekee writes "According to an article at CNET, Sun is planning on creating Opteron-based servers. These are expected to include 2-processor and 4-processor models running either Solaris or Linux. This move isn't surprising, given the performance and cost gaps between the Opteron and UltraSPARC processors. A move to Opteron would allow them to be more competitve in cost and focus more on what they're good at, designing systems, not processors."
I think I will put Linux on it, then I will submit the story to /.
Is this truly the only Earth I can live on?
focus more on what they're good at, designing systems, not processors
well -- they aren't really all that good at either.
Just much better than Microsoft.
last time I checked, DELL and HP did not have all the other Ancillary Business units that SUN has going. and comparing a Dell system to a SUN is just wrong headed. I am sure SUN will have al the best interconnects and such on a board that hey build for performance, where DELL just takes crap off the heap and slaps it together.
I am the Alpha and the Omega-3
What's promising to me is seeing more movement against Apple in the server market. This should really push the boundaries that the PPC crowd have encroached upon, and help shift the entire industry once more into a commodity based computing system. Cheaper for all.
Why the antagonism against Apple? Companies who claim to be open source friendly but keep closed source hardware that's why. I find it offensive that Apple use Open Source as a pillar to hold up tired old "Premium Hardware" deals.
will it run SCO Unix ???
Apple is nobodies friend.
They keep closed hardware, half-closed os, exploit open source work, rely on trendy marketing, and are just an all around shit company.
You ignorance proves you have never used Solaris.
Get a clue.
