Sun To Build Opteron Servers
geekee writes "According to an article at CNET, Sun is planning on creating Opteron-based servers. These are expected to include 2-processor and 4-processor models running either Solaris or Linux. This move isn't surprising, given the performance and cost gaps between the Opteron and UltraSPARC processors. A move to Opteron would allow them to be more competitve in cost and focus more on what they're good at, designing systems, not processors."
I personally wonder, are they selling the Opteron based servers so they don't need to spend more money on R&D to make their products more appealing, or are they just plain lazy?
GOOD AT DESIGNING OPERATING SYSTEMS? Did you ever use Solaris? It eats freaking 512MB of RAM just to bring up a login screen and it is slow and buggy as hell. I have seen admins with 10 years of Solaris experience switching over to Linux after a few hours of playing with a Linux box. Solaris is the second worst OS there is, only outperformed by UnixWare, which is simply in a class of its own (uber-crap).
it depends on how you interpret these numbers
biotch.
