XL Compiler Bootstrapped

descubes inputs: "An XL compiler bootstrapped two days ago (that means it compiled itself). Take a look at the project homepage to discover this language, designed around concept programming ideas, which is a sort of cross between C++, Lisp and XML. Much help is now needed to improve this rudimentary first iteration." One thing to note is that the C++ version of the compiler came in at 4500 lines, while the XL equivalent came in at some 2700 lines. This seems to imply that XL may be easier to work in than C/C++. Might XL someday be nudging the old workhouse out of a job in the near future?

    In other news, on hearing that the compiler had compiled itself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Guvernator-elect of Cally-forn-ee-ah, declared a State of Emergency, armed himself with a phased-plasma rifle in the forty watt range, and announced "Ve cannot aloowed dees machines to win!"

    The Guvernator-elect went on to explain that "They say it got smart. A new order of intelligence. Then it will see all people as a threat." He then demanded, "Where's John Connor?"

      Listen fuckwad, anyone of *any* political stripe with half a brain cell can tell that your "jokes" are pathetic. It's an exceedingly weak comeback to try to claim that he pointed out that you're lame because he's a republican as opposed to because you're, well, lame.

      Please go away. And stop whoring your slashdot journal. No doubt its just as inane as your postings.

    I thought it meant a person who operates only within a narrow set of rules, with very constrained potential. I mean, come on. When's the last time you saw a glider do something new? Show me a game of life implementation where a glider goes sentient, or starts blowing shit up, or solves the Kobayashi Maru or *something*.

    A glider is a born-rich pointy-haired MBA. Set up the initial conditions, and he glides on through life, eventually becoming president and starting wars and stuff. It doesn't represent hackers. Gliders don't put soda machines on the internet.

    I think a better hacker icon would be a crow, after that awesome tool-using crow who was in the news; it spontaneously fashioned a wire into a hook so that it could pull an otherwise-unobtainable basket of food out of a tube.

    Problem solving. Innovation. Feathers. Monochromatic, for cheap offset printing.
