Ars Technica Posts Panther Review
Nexum writes "Today Ars released their latest Mac OS X review, this time for Max OS X 10.3 Panther. It's great to see another tour de force from the Ars guys. They have, as usual, an excellent insight into the new OS release, and they also cover that burning question 'is it worth $129?,' and Panther seems to come out rather well. Certainly worth a read."
HOw many slashdotters are suicidal? Well, let me explain something to you. Since I am an inept, born loser with many emotional, psychological and phyiscal problems I have come to the considered decision to "end it all". To say "goodbye cruel world" to "shuffle off this mortal coil" and to "give the devil his due". I was born with supreme intelligence but not enough maturity to handle it and was so socially unskilled that as the world shouted to me "you are a LOSER" I said to myself "maybe they're right. Maybe I am one of the more loserly folks." Then, as my loserdom grew I realized there is absolutely no turning back now. SO, I invite all of my loserly friends on this site (and you know who you are, my beautiful loserly ones) I invite all to join me in the first ever SLASHDOT SUICIDE PACT! Time/date/method TBD! When I get home this evening, I will setup an IRC channel to get things organized.
Oh, and by the way FIRST (and last) POST!!!

Let the flames begin. Whenever there is a post about OS X we get tons of people who just scream and shout because its not Pure open source. Get over it, they are a company, they have to make money. They do alot better then most commercial companies.
Modded up to +1 as I read this, how long before it gets bitchslapped right down to -1 by the zealots?
It's all dark here.
With Longhorn and its rumors of DRM-crippled media, and non-network-centric applications 2+ years from a reality, this is a perfect time for Apple to produce an OS for x86. Users desire things that work, and are easily exchanged with others, intellectual property and piracy arguments be damned. It's why MS won the desktop and office apps to begin with - you could install their OS and office suite on other PCs without an issue. XP began to cripple that, and people clearly don't like the crippling, resorting to cracks as need be.
From the multimedia file perspective of iTunes' AAC vs. WMAs, Apple can take that ball and run with it. Rendezvous streaming allows for reasonable sharing, and iTunes allows for uncrippled CD burning (and reripping, for those who dig the MP3 thing). It's not unfettered, but it's bound to be better than what Longhorn brings us.
In short, Apple, please port OS X. Or OS XI, if that's what you decide to call it. I'll buy it at retail, and I've never directly bought an x86 OS (other than Red Hat, natch) in my life.

Steel tariffs have raised costs for US industry The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has confirmed that US tariffs on steel imports are illegal.
The WTO's announcement is a victory for the European Union (EU), and puts fresh pressure on Washington to withdraw import duties on steel.
There have been a few articles that I have attempted to contribute over the years, which have not made it to post.

/. for what it is, a distraction from my now mundane life and sometimes very informative site.
However if you want to complain about comments being modded down or up, blame lazy users with moderator power. I for one have been to blame as well.
Just recently I have started looking at 1 thru -1 posts and modding them up accordingly if they are interesting or informative.
I think slashdot is still pretty cool, it isn't the

Increasingly, companies are making bigger products for America's bigger people, customizing everything from caskets to seat belts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 percent of Americans are considered obese.

Pro-Apple, get the handouts. Question Apple? Get smacked down with Troll, Flamebait, Overrated... whatever. Ugh. It's too thick to breathe in here.
I mean, it's a nicely written post, but come on already. Is a "I made the switch" post worth that kind of praise??
