Building a Budget Storage Server

An anonymous reader noted an article running over at Firingsquad talking about building a budget storage server. Talks about cooling, power, RAID, expandability, etc. Good overview type article, with practical application.

Why you are being an ass, you might want to check for typos before you post.

No definitions found for "manufactrer", perhaps you mean:

This is also the reason Linux was not a good choice for our system -- it doesn't make sense to put XFS/ext3/ReiserFS drives into a USB2.0/Firewire external box.

I just flat out don't understand this statement. Can someone shed some light on this?

You don't understand the comment, only because the author didn't understand the implications of his statement.

Frankly, that bit left me scratching my head too.

(Especially as I run an external drive box connected via USB, running a reiserfs file system as backup... - with no problems at all.)

Well, until I read the rest that is - and realised the guy didn't know if he was building a gaming rig or a storage server.

At that point I simply decided he was talking crap and left it at that.

One only has to look at his efforts to create more "cooling" space in the rig to create more airflow, only to then stuff the space he created with a rat's nest of cables...

I wouldn't mind, but the article was entitled "Building a budget storage server."

    Methinks that:

"Building a confused box that has no defined purpose or logic behind the component choices, but don't worry because it's got some bitchin' glitzy bits!"

    - would have been a better choice of title.

    YMMV.
