The Ultimate Desk... Sort Of

Hanzo writes "So, you need a desk. With mood lighting. And a pop-up LCD monitor. It even just so happens you like Space Ghost. Well, for a mere $39,995(USD), you can have exactly what you need. ?" They still aren't selling powerbands or insect musicians, but I figure it's only a matter of time now.

I'm sure now that the US economy is on an upturn every parent will be buying one of these for their 5 little dumplings!

Honestly, isn't this desk worth more than quite a large percentage of US houses? (I live in the UK where the house prices are higher so correct me if I'm wrong...).

I seriously think this has to be a joke, they've obviously made the price so insanely prohibative that no-one in their right mind is going to buy one of these things. I'm pretty sure I could walk down to the local furniture shop, where I know this guy who is a seriously ancient master carpenter (he built fitted wardrobes last year, they're the best-built piece of furniture in my home), and get him to make me one of these for a far more reasonable price.

Just give any decent carpenter the dimensions of the screen, fridge, etc and I'm sure he'll come up with something better if you throw $40K at him!

i built a desk to replace my case - so I'm not sure if it's a case mod, or a desk mod -- either way, i have no case now -- my entire pc is hidden inside my desk (except the monitor). When in "desk mode" the pc is invisible. You can pull out a drawer and tweak the mobo. Or fold down the drawer front to use the keyboard & mouse & access the drives.

The really scary thing is tho....... there are people out there who will pay for this!

If anyone had ever actually paid for one, there would probably be an actual photo published of the desk, not just the rendered images we are shown. I'd offer that not even the manufacturer is willing to pay for one.

But I agree. $40K is too much for a knock-off. I'd rather wait and buy the real Space Ghost Coast to Coast desk on eBay, after the show is finally cancelled in a few hundred years. Now that would be worth something!

I am really amazed at how many people are actually complaining about the price! I really should collect all of your names so that I can have a really fun first of April...

And even if you did get the joke, it is hardly worth the bandwidth. I would complain that /. has gone down the tubes, but hasn't it always been like this?

The thing is, I"m not convinced that this IS a joke. It's a publicity stunt, to be sure, but from reading the other items available in the site (such as Birdman's 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner, Powerpuff girls and Dexters lab bedrooms, etc) that all of the ridiculous looking items are possibly the real thing. Most of them are limited in quantity to 1-3, and the million dollar treehouse listed actually references California building codes, site permit fees, etc.

That said, I agree with you that this isn't quite "news for nerds," and it CERTAINLY isn't "stuff that matters."

I made one, it's simple, but effective.

I took a trip to Home Depot and got 4 10" x 5' pine boards, plus some furring strips for the edges. I butted 3 together with some flat aluminum plates and reinforced the edges with the furring strips. I sanded the edges, lightly stained it and sealed it and I had a decent surface to start with.

I then snagged an old 2 drawer file cabinet from work, welded up a pair of adjustable legs, and made 2 pedestals for the 4th board. The file cabinet holds up the desk on one side, the legs on the other, and the pedestals hold up the "shelf" (4th board), which I use for the printer and fax machine. Since the pedestals are just hollow square steel boxes, they also hold a bunch of ethernet jacks on one side, and a switched outlet on the other.

Lots of room for crap. 2 17" monitors. an old Pentium machine acting as a firewall, tons of old cds, an old laptop, empty coffee cups and pepsi cans, papers, pens, etc.

Here's a real desk worthy of slashdot. I designed it myself and am using it right now. Go see my computer table for some pictures. Why this strange contraption? It allows me to lie flat on my back with my desk suspended above me. I attach my computer to the rotatable desktop for perfect keyboard and display positioning. It sure helps me keep working while I recover from back problems. Not cool, but somewhat practical.
