Brazil Moves Away From Microsoft

An anonymous reader writes "Citing economic as well as social reasons, Brazil's government is opting to move away from Windows, opting instead for Open Source (read: Linux) solutions. Interestingly, Microsoft's representative in Brazil decries this as a movement away from freedom and choice..."

Microsoft is free to compete in the open source arena just like everyone else.

Sure they are, but I would not give a shell account to Bill Gates..

A little over ten years ago Brazil officially had "a strict policy regulated the internal market, protecting the local IT industry by imposing many restrictions on importing goods from abroad similar to those produced domestically." This was very good for local technology firms. It also resulted in a huge number of pirate video games within Brazil, all perfectly legal there. It was encouraged to remove these restrictions and sign on to the popular view of copyrights and software of the time. If I were running a "small" country, I'd be having a good look at the health of Brazil's computing industry then compared to now.

Copyright has been a fun experiment, but perhaps it's time to declare it a failure and move on.

Just another example of why brazil is still a turd world nation. Yep good idea go for the OS that is free but costs twice as much to employ people to work on while waiting for all those free programs to be developed but never get done because of programmers who are too busy to work on their hobby. I guess collective farms sounded good as well. That is untill a 80 million people starved to death.

Redhat got with the wise and decided to turf support for their baseline product because it was costing em money...instead they are using their new free distro as a labrat for everyone out there.

Think about it....if youwere in business would you give something away for free? FUCK NO!

What a stupid cretin... Do you suppose that a normal user can do it in a Linux system? Did you know, asshole, that you MUST HAVE permissions for read/write/execute any command in a folder&file and to delete it recursively? Only the root (Admin in your M$ jargon) have r/w/x outside his $HOME directory. Try rm -Rf /any/* as a normal user in a hole root dir and you'll discover what i'm talking about... Tough you didn't install and fucked up the hole system yourself.

Brazil had the freedom to make a choice and that is "freedom and choice" is all about. Is I take it that Microsoft is now going to run and cry to US Senators and Congressmen.

the guys bashing microsoft in these posts are like the rebel resistance in IRAQ and Afghan --- as soon as something negative happens to the US they think they're winning the war --- well let me just inform you that MS won't be going anywhere they hire the brightest people who are now busily working instead of makeing stupid assumptions out of every piece of news that hits the fan --- they look at the big picture and it isn't desktop linux --- there biggest concern is the server rooms right now --- so you can all keep writing code for free for comapanies like redhat --- companies that will eventually either go under or start charging you for what you helped them build --- so instead of wasting your time in these forums start writing code for buggy fedora so that redhat can start charging for that one too sooner
