Wardriver Charged with Theft of Communications
BiggsTheCat writes "A number of news sources are reporting that a Toronto man is the first to be charged with "theft of communications" (Canadian Criminal Code S. 342.1) for downloading child pornography using someone else's residential wireless network. The "War Driver" was caught naked from the waist down driving the wrong way down a one-way street, with a laptop in hand. The Edmonton Sun warns that 'War Driving ... is becoming more and more common among perverts trying to avoid online detection'. Yeah."
One of my colleagues at work reported he had set up his wlan at home and accidentally stumbled across a neighbours wlan.
This made me turn on WEP for the first time as soon as I got home (sure it isn't perfect, but neither is the lock on your front door).
Both my Macs noticed my wlan was now WEP protected and prompted for the key/passphrase and were immediately up and running.
After some digging, research on the 'net and much frustration I've managed to manually tell my two PCs that the network is now encrypted - but I'll be damned if I can find anywhere to tell it what the key is!
Yet another reason I am so glad to be moving to Macs (although I have a number of legacy games to finish before the move is complete ;-)

In todays world where space is limit people are universally for property rights because if they arent theres nowhere to go and they will starve. its not like theres miles and miles of open prarie land to just claim and live off of anymore.

If the land is not owned by anyone then everyone is free pillage it. If it is owned then the owner has a reason to take care of it so that the land value doesnt go south.
The modern world cannot return notions of shared property and still function because communities are too large and isolated that they dont give a shit about the next guy. I want to the rape the land before the next guy does, unless I own it... then i want to take care of it.

People protect their property, and take care of it so it will still be valuable later. People stupid enough to foul their own nests are not rare, but they are rarely anything but poor.
