Eclipse Consortium Turns Two
An anonymous reader writes "The Eclipse consortium celebrates its second anniversary this month, and is releasing milestone builds of the third version of its universal platform for tools integration. The Eclipse platform has been downloaded over 18,000 times, and in two short years has spawned an entire "ecosystem" of users and vendors. Eclipse has been recognized with more than eight top industry awards and honors, and open technology and commercial offerings associated with Eclipse have also grown at an unprecedented rate for tools technology."
Eclipse and for that matter Websphere Studio are the most mediocre products I've seen this decade. They are slow, too feature rich, poorly designed and absolute dog shit when compared to visualstudio.net( which unfortunatly runs on a fly ridden pile of turd, operating system)
The posting says " in two short years has spawned an entire "ecosystem" of users and vendors " Apart from IBM whose a "vendor" for an eclipse based product thats selling successfully or being used by many?
Now if you want a good 100% java based application which is truly open sourced and understandable( just look at the source code of Eclipse and you will see turd ) then try out JEdit. If as many resources where spent on this wonderfull product it would make a great base for a kick ass IDE.
The only thing thats not absolutly stale and without innovation that came out of Eclipse is SWT. And afaik this is the only part of the framework people could be usefull from this project.
I'ts truly a shame that a company that has good talent working for it has so many morons in management with no vision. Maybe they should open source Lotus Notes, so we can enjoy the benefits of firing up an application in no less than a minute and freezing your whole system while sockets are open. Im sure alot of you would go giddy for that.
