More Damning SCO Evidence At Groklaw

An anonymous reader writes "There's a very interesting story up at Groklaw right now. PJ reports on new evidence that Chris Hellwig, a SCO employee, contributed code to SMP, XFS, and JFS and did so with the knowledge of his supervisor." Groklaw is thorough, and this is another good example of just quite how thorough.

I bought the N75. It's much lighter to carry around than the heavy ALL METAL FE and, when I can justify a buying a digital SLR I won't begrudge the investment in the N75 which is very small (under $300). Don't forget to get a SB-28 flash off EBAY, it's rocks with the Nikon SLR's. If you have any more questions, feel free to continue the thread. I'll check back.

      Hmm interesting.

I never considered getting a 'modern' slr. How's the reliability of the N75 compared to that of the FE in terms of body durability, and I suppose mechanism durability? I could very well be using the camera in both hot & cold situations.

The N75 is made from the carbon fiber plastic material (so it's basically plastic), but has a metal lens mount. The 28-80 mm lens is carbon fiber plastic too. However, it is compact and light-weight. The optical quality on the lenses is near perfect. The N75 is (almost) a joy to carry around. I shot a couple of fall festivals and the camera was not a burden to have around my neck all day. I think the SB-28 flash weighs more than the camera and lens.

If you are a true FULL MANUAL camera operator, then there are only a few things you will miss. 1) No Aperature ring (you have to use the thumb wheel to set the aperature), 2) You can't overrride the ISO setting of the film and 3) No mirror lockup option.

The N75 uses the new Nikon G autofocus lenses, but they are amazing. And the price! you can get the 70-300mm Nikon lens for about $150 retail. The drawbacks, carbon plastic and no aperature ring, but again the quality is near flawless. It's Nikon engineering and glass.

I don't want to take away any joy anyone may have in the challenge of getting the perfect shot by simultaneously adjusting all the dials while trying to compose the perfect shot, but the N75 is so much easier than the old SLR's. Also, for the truly lazy it supports several useful auto-focus modes. The manual focus option is still available, just the flick the AF switch and rotate the focus ring on the end of the lens.

The N75 can be used as an expensive point and shoot or full manual :) The autofocus is wickedly fast, but has the annoying low light focus lamp. If you hook up the SB-78 flash, it uses the focus light on the flash which is a dull red, rather than a white bright light. The temperature operating ranges are not listed in the manual so if you are going to use it in extremes you might want to check with Nikon. On the plus side, if you use the camera in extremes and destroy it, you aren't out a lot of money :)

I really like it and bought it in a weak moment while I was having another camera repaired :) I get camera withdrawl symptoms when they are in the shop. I'd say go down to the store and check it out, you will be amazed at the optical quality and light weight. You will be less amazed by the plastic and CR-2 batteries, but again the trade-off is size and weight. You can get an optional battery pack which mounts underneath and uses standard rechargable AA's.

Sometimes I laugh to myself when I am out on a shoot and see the typical red faced photographer panting from lugging all his heavy metal gear around. I can get the same shots (or better) at a fraction of the weight.

The FE and FM-3A are great cameras. More durable, more expensive, but less compact. I am not sure how long you hang on to cameras so that might factor as well. I tend to hang onto cameras for 2 years, then trade, buy, sell or give to my dad.

The N75 body plus two lenses (70-80mm and 70-300mm) is $440 retail while just the body on the FM-3A is $579 retail. So no matter how you look at it, it's a great deal. Also, you might find that you don't mind lugging it around and that you are getting better shots with less film. I'll keep an eye on the thread, let me know what you do and how it works out. I think even Best Buy carries the N75.

Lastly, I am ready for a Digital SLR, but can't justify the $4000. The new digital Canon Rebel looks almost perfect at under $1000, but I am waiting for Nikon's answer to the Digital Rebel which should be a sweet camera. I use the Nikon 4500 as my digital camera and like it a lot. It is probably the only camera I will keep permanently unless Nikon re-releases another swivel style camera. It is an awesome low profile sniper camera. I just wish the 4500 had a faster focus and fps. I hate shutter lag.

Slashdot should devote a whole week to talking about cameras and photography. Also, have you been to Nikon School? It's well worth the investment of $99 and 8+ hours. There was a lot I knew and a lot of really great tips that I picked up from the pros.

Take care, and prepare to be modded down even harder :)

Boy punished for talking about gay mom

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again" after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Monday.

Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess November 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.

Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint.

A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again."

A phone message left for Lafayette Parish schools superintendent James Easton was not immediately returned.

The ACLU is demanding the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff.

"I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had said a word so bad that he didn't want to repeat it over the phone," Huff said. "But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty word."
