McBride's New Open Letter on Copyrights

dtfinch writes "An open letter was posted today by Darl McBride, where he restates his claim that the GPL violates the U.S. Constitution, patent laws, copyright laws, and the DMCA. Mostly he just builds up a false image of the Free Software Foundation and open source supporters claiming that they have no respect for intellectual property and believe copyrights should be eliminated, then attacks that image, AKA the straw man attack. Nothing we haven't seen before."

Well this won't be the most popular opinion so I'll just post it AC. I read the open letter. Instead of rabidly attacking it I am conceding that maybe, just maybe, all those stipulated facts are just that: facts. Maybe the Supreme Court justices did side 7-2 in favor of SCO's opinion on copyrights. Maybe Congress did side with SCO's philosophy when they passed the DCMA. Maybe copyrights and patents ARE valuable because they've been in place since the mid 1970s and produced a technological powerhouse of a country (while patents have gotten out of control that doesn't lessen their value). Lastly (and this will flamebait me for sure) maybe this board and OSS fans in general are are bunch of disgruntled coding piss ants who are either (1) too lazy or (2) too incompetant to found companies of their own.

I too am a coding piss ant, but I'm also a partner in a company with 4 other piss ants who have all had enough. We've been at this 4 years and are less than a year or two away from founding. And we did it on programmer's salaries with NO OUTSIDE MONEY OR VC FUNDING of any kind. So yes it can be done. Why are you still wasting your time giving your skills away when you could be destined for so much more?
