Sun Negotiating With Wal-Mart Over Java Desktop
An anonymous reader writes "According to an EWeek article, Sun is challenging Microsoft on a new front: the consumer market. Believing its Java Desktop System is "a more effective home and retail solution," the company is negotiating with major retailers Wal-Mart and Office Depot to include the Java desktop on consumer PCs and laptops."

nice post nig
Not very subtle, but sure to catch a few morons. Bonus points for skirting the flamebait line so elequently.
Not at all subtle, but extremely amusing. Bonus points for obsurdity. Points taken away for lack of formatting...put a little more effort into it next time.
"I love you, Dr. Zaius^iW^W^WLinux!"
"I would say that 99 per cent of what my father has written about his own life is false." - L. Ron Hubbard Jr.
There is more FUD against Microsoft from some of the open source "community", then the reverse. Certainly we see more false news against Microsoft than we see against open source. In fact, in most of the embarassing events for open source, we see posts that praise the guys for the way they handle. In addition, nobody wants to accept the fact that Linux is a crappy operating system, which is not mature yet and requires you to restrict your options or hack it. I am afraid this is a proof that Linux on desktop is doomed.
On the server side the only reason why it is a viable option is because big names adopted Linux and they gave their full support to it. The reasoning is simple, there are lots of volunteers around the world ready to commit their time to these projects. The claim that open source somehow makes your software better is a false wishful thinking. Your software doesn't become superior by being open source, it becomes superior by hard working and sweat. You can do it by employing programmers or you can do it by people who cooperate without any monetary relation.
Right now as of this moment, you can't go with the linux alternative in your business. First of all, there are so many people speaking in the name of the open source. Some of them are really doing something about it, whereas many others are simply users or developers with attitude. They will attack you at the moment you try to make the software better. Most of the decisions are political rather than careful thinking. When you speak out about a particular issue, you are getting flamed by some open source advocates who have a pesonality to attack anybody they disagree with. So you don't see much people around the open source who really do something, rather than flaming people. There is not enough number of programmers doing real work. There is a huge gap between Microsoft software and Linux software and I don't see it is getting narrower. People on the open source is not focused at all, most of the discussions, insightful, interesting comments are about bashing Microsoft.
