Give the Gift of Slashdot

It's time to blatantly plug a recent addition to Slashdot's Subscription System: just in time for the holidays, you can now give a subscription to any other user. You have the choice to give your gift anonymously, or take credit for your fabulous selfless generosity. If that isn't enough, we still have assorted Slashdot Merchandise available at ThinkGeek... the more T-Shirts you buy, the less often you need to do laundry.

Get 'em hooked, then they'll have to keep joining, once they see that the banners have once again quadrupled in size!

what banners? oh you mean those not running Junkbuster

Buy a slashdot subscription to support the site. dont buy one to get rid of ad's.

Note: you can modify junkbuster to only show the banners you want to see... I only see an AD when a thinkgeek ad pop's up. (hint: AD id field)

I know I'm just preaching to the choir for the folks here, but if you are new to this site, read on..

With Slashdot, VA Software has developed a new breed of astoturfing. Unlike previous models that involved planting support for new products, Slashdot instead cultivates support for products by having its so-called editors strategically moderate comments up or down. Slashdot does this to grow an environment ripe for advertisers.. not just current ones, but future prospects. By manipulating the moderation system, the editors build support for products in hope that advertisers will see the site as a positive place to promote their wares. It's simple really, more advertisers = more money. Unfortunately, messing with the moderation system involves supressing one side of the story. And it's happened, I've seen it. Slashdot's editors can get away with deception because of the long standing perception that the site's forums are a true mirror of the geek community. At one time Slashdot's message boards were a reliable indicator of geekdom, but not any more now that the crew spends most of its time carefully grooming a hotbed for the sleaziest of marketers.

Slashdot is not what it used to be. In fact, you could say it is dying.

Fark. You will have more fun here. Not so much tech news, but then again neither is slashdot. They have photshop contests too! Plus AudioEdit contests! Throw in the Boobies posts, funny news, some tech ( just enough ) posts and a crowd with a great overall sense of humour and the only reason you will find yourself here is because your fingers are just trained to type in the url when a browser opens. Old habits die hard, but slashdot has entered both the pointless and funless zone simultaneously recently.
