PC Mag - Mac OS X Insecure
Suki writes "In this recent story a PC Mag writer concludes that "Panther and Jaguar were not better at outrunning vulnerabilities than Windows" and as my personal fav. ends by asking "How cocky are you feeling now, Mac elite? Hmm. Suddenly it's gotten pretty quiet around here." The article discusses many previous Windows security holes against a recent Mac OS X security flaw."
Double edged sword there. As it's less popular, less apps run on it. Also less viruses though. Depends which is more important.

Seasonal reference (spring)
Or it's not haiku
very few Americans know (or care) about the difference of a haiku and a sonreu (or can spell it).
Sorry but that's plain bullshit
That of course was true though it is no longer so commonality

Not in Soviet

Insensitive clod!

Yes, as no one wants to attack the 10 people that use macs. It would be a waste of time.

From the Glossary of Poetry Terms: haiku A Japanese poem composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Haiku often reflect on some aspect of nature. Often, but not necessarily. The structure is the main thing.

Well now we know who's the most anal-retentive.
Chill out, hypersnacky. It was meant as a joke in the first place. Note the 'afterthought' addition of what I was chiding him for..
Here's another one for you to look up: "subtle"
I guess I am anal retentive, since I didn't pick up on the "joke". I guess that's because I'm so anal that I require jokes to have "humor" or to be "funny". Since you were the one picking at nits (and wrongly), I'd have to guess that you're the anal one. The one who doesn't seem to really understand what a joke is. Here's one for YOU to look up: "unfunny"

"Unfunny" isn't a word.

That was awesome. Seriously.
Double-plus-un-good observation.
The parent post provides clear evidence that the slashdot editors have put in special cases to abuse certain posts.
I saw the above Haiku, modded at -1 Funny, and decided to mod it up. I gave it interesting, clicked the button, and the page said:
+1 (Interesting) dear slashdot first post (88928-7692720, 1 point left)
However, the post displayed as 0, Funny. I checked the info and the moderation totals were 40% funny, 30% offtopic, and 10% troll, with a moderation sum of 0, with a line for "Extra 'Funny' Modifier 0. The total score was 0.
Within a matter of minutes, the post changed to -1 Funny with 40% funny, 20% offtopic, 20% troll. Moderation total was -1, with an Extra 'Funny' Modifier of 0, and a total score of -1.
In case you're wondering, I made this anonymous post from a different computer in a different subnet, so they have no way of undoing my moderation unless they make the change manually.
Clearly, the editors have set a special flag to make it impossible to give the post a karma bonus, but they use scripts to automatically mod it down. Thus, any attempts to give karma to this entertaining poster will actually result in a loss of karma. This subversion of the moderation system is yet another example of the slashdot editors' rampant abuse of power.
The account used to make the moderation has excellent karma and receives mod points often. We'll see if the editors try to punish me for revealing their abuses by retaliating against that account. (Note that if they do it, it means anyone can make false accusations about any account in an anonymous post and cause the editors to take action against the account)
how does one go about getting a 1 funny?
My Network Killed the Panther
Another day in the cube farm. A Typical mac business user unwraps their shiny new g5 and plugs it into the network.
Hrm, where are those network settings again? Ahh, apple menu > system preferences > network. Okay, DHCP is on, they have an address folks. So far So good. Oops they still use appletalk, gotta turn that on. And dont forget to setup the sharing control panel.
Okay, they can get to the internet, and see some of those uncouth windows domains in their network browser. Hmm no luck with the appletalk zone, where did my server lists go? Uh oh my samba connections don't seem to be working either... Hmmm.
Being the savvy web enabled user, they check apples site. Ahh Directory Services needs to be modified. Where is that again. Ahh yes, 4 or 5 clicks in. Hmm, appletalk is turned off by default. Thats helpful. Savy user enables appletalk. Then they configure the active directory services for their windows domain. Specify their wins server. SMB connectivity is also on. Time to try those servers again!
Uh oh, nothing is showing up in the appletalk zone. In fact, our frustrated user doesnt see the zone in my network browser at all. And no windows servers. Just domains. After a lot of refreshing, they have a server list. Try and connect.... Oops gone again. Well, the samba connections arent working, good thing they can use the connect to command to connect to the appletalk share. Uh oh! It only supports 8 character file names, and our savy admins require strong passwords!
Welcome to networking 101 with panther on a large network.
Currently, panther has cripling networking issues which have been privately confirmed as issue number one within apple's os x development group.
Any network with over 335 'hosts', basic broadcast protocols of which the average mac uses 6 or 7, your networking is efftively non functional. Way to go Q&A! Just plug into any large network and you will soon be hearing the same thing from apple technical support.
...and I fully expect this post to be 0 also. The moderators must be commie Mac-using bastards :).
