Christmas Gifts for Geeks

scottfi writes "The shopping season is just about over and I'm always on the lookout for the cool geek gadget to get friends and family (or myself). What cool items are on your list this year or you have wrapped up for others? There are a ton of gift guides online, but I always like to see what the slashdot crowd would like under their tree." I recommend the Harmony Remote, an iPod, and of course a Slashdot Subscription ;)

With Slashdot, VA Software has developed a new breed of astroturfing. Unlike previous models that involved planting support for new products, Slashdot instead cultivates support for products by having its so-called editors strategically moderate comments up or down. Slashdot does this to grow an environment ripe for advertisers.. not just current ones, but future prospects. By manipulating the moderation system, the editors build support for products in hope that advertisers will see the site as a positive place to promote their wares. It's simple really, more advertisers = more money. Unfortunately, messing with the moderation system involves supressing one side of the story. And it's happened, I've seen it. Slashdot's editors can get away with deception because of the long standing perception that the site's forums are a true mirror of the geek community. At one time Slashdot's message boards were a reliable indicator of geekdom, but not any more now that the crew spends most of its time carefully grooming a hotbed for the sleaziest of marketers.

Slashdot is not what it used to be. In fact, you could say it is dying.

    Tipping?
Shouldn't the waiter's employer be paying them? I don't get to ask my companies customers for an extra 15% because my employer isn't paying me enough!

And the tipping inflation continues. In the 70s it was 10%, in the early-90s it crept up to 15% and now I hear people bitch if they don't get 20-25%. Christ, I just gave you tax free money for ignoring me for 30 minutes, and you are not happy because I didn't give you enough.

Most of the time, I sit in the bar just so I can get up and ask the bartender for a refill. I remember one place that yelled at me for that, after waiting too long I got tired of it and walked over to bar for a water refill.

I still give, because society demands it, but I don't have to be happy about it.
