Also, why is it bad to bully third world dictators. The world is a lot better off with out them, and NO we cannot take them all out at once. Different countries take different tactics, German (and JapaN) took war, Russia (and Eastern Eurpope) took a stare down, and China (and Vietnam) seem to be taking handshakes. There is no one good solution for Dictators, you need to approach them individually with a firm understanding of your (countries) needs. If you have one dictator or another that you feels needs to be taken out more than Saddam, take it up with your own government, mine is a little busy now.
Actually, it is various international laws that make some wars illegal, and there are important exceptions. Wars in self-defense, for example, are entirely legal. Even pre-emptive attacks against countries that present a real and imminent threat to any other country are legal. Pretty much all other wars are illegal, unless granted an exception by the UN (which exists due to a treaty all of its members have agreed to comply with).
While the war did in fact remove a dictator, that was not its purpose. To claim otherwise would be to call Bush a liar. He explicitly used the "pre-emptive attack against a real and imminent threat" rationale for the invasion. Our government said repeatedly that the attack was pre-emptive, that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and that we knew EXACTLY where they were (Rumsfeld said this). To claim the war was for any other purpose would be to suggest that members of the administration lied.
So, assuming Iraq has WMDs and we know exactly where they are, I think it's safe to say that the war was quite legal.
I wonder why the US is trying so hard to keep the UN, Germany, France, and Russia out of Iraq. They cannot commit troops because the US requires that they serve US commanders rather than UN commanders (in essense, we are requesting that France let us draft their soldiers into our army). They can't even help out on the civilian front because we've locked them out of contract bids. No wonder the countries we are trying to keep from helping Iraq are using debt as a bargaining chip so that the US will stop chasing off international help. Countries like Canada and Mexico, not having that sort of bargaining power, have to sit on the sidelines until the US finally lets them in.
It's great that we got rid of a dictator. Yay for that. It's too bad we lied and broke our treaty obligations in order to do it. It's also too bad we're working so hard to prevent other countries from helping the people of Iraq. And of course, there's the downside of all the attention being focused away from real threats like Al Qaeda.
Actually, it is various international laws that make some wars illegal,
Well, since we are the world's police force, who, exactly is going to enforce those laws? The French?
It's not even /.'ed for Chrissakes. And post fulltexts AC.

Hey Sacks! How do you like the negative karma, BITCH?
i'm a 23 year old american male, i've worked extensivly with Unix and Unix-Like OSs, and like to think of myself as highly capable. i've returned to part time school while continuing to work in the IT field. and... i'm just not digging this. somehow, living aboard a few tons of floating duck apeals to me (and, no, i'm not a nascar fan).
so i ask you - should i join? might this life appeal to a young, charged person who is disintersted in material progress, enjoys travel and foriegn experience?
