noims writes "Sunday is the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of John Von Neumann, the man with one of the strongest claims to the title of Father of Modern Computing. Although, as noted at the time by Mark Stanley of Freefall, several sources indicate that it may have been December 3rd." Update: 12/28 01:07 GMT by T : deja206 writes "Today (December 28, CET) also is Linus Torvalds' 34th birthday. Now we probably wouldn't be here talking about all this stuff if it weren't for him.     The so-called "Turing machine" was actually stolen from Isaac Asimov, who came up with the idea in one of his first short stories, "The little robot that could" back in 1938. Asimov was gratious enough to ignore the obvious insult of having his idea stolen but completely unattributed. Of course, in Asimov's version, the state table was stored in a positronic device, which would receive inputs and control the movement of the continuous tape.

    What also isn't mentioned very often is that Turing was a homosexual pedophile who convicted of buggering boys under the age of 17. No wonder he's a hero here on Slashdot.
