Windows 98 Phased Out

Via_Patrino writes "According to Microsoft on january 16, MS Windows 98 and 98se will end Extended Support Phase, that means they'll became obsolete and assisted support will no longer be available from Microsoft, affecting about 27% of the internet users. That means even if 98 is working well for your needs (and especially computer specifications) and you want to pay for support (because that might cost less than switching hardware) you can't, because who will be able to patch eventual new bugs (security related or not) besides Microsoft? So if you're not planning a switch it might be your last opportunity to update MS Windows 98, after that some software might disappear from MS website (just like MSIE 5.5 for 95 did)."

    With the recent death of the goatse.cx guy, we need a new goatse.cx guy. This is your opportunity to be the next goatse.cx guy!!! Reply with your answers to the following questions.

    1. On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate the looseness of your anus? (1 being incredibly tight, 10 being incredibly loose)
    2. If you rated the looseness of your anus under 9, would you be interested in a looser anus?
    3. Why do you want to be the goatse.cx guy?
    4. If the looseness of your anus is less than a 9 do you have any problem with CmdrTaco shoving taco shells up your anus and smashing them?

    Dude, the level of "support" for 68K Macs in those forums is basically at the level of trivia -- "Use System 7.5. You need a localtalk bridge. Here's where you can download Netscape 4.05." -- stuff that everyone who was there knows.

    Much of that is due to the fact that old Mac warez Just Works, but you aren't going to be able to solve any real complex problems on those forums. Not that you'd want to.

    And, yeah, there's a thriving Windows 3.1 newsgroup somewhere out there.

    I know Windows ME was a bit of a flop in order to hold manufacturer's over until XP came out, but I would imagine it had a greater percentage than 1%.

    Could they have just included ME in 98's group? I at least find it surprising that so many people still use it (even if it was MS's best OS!)

    Unfortunatelly I have heard about an OS called Linux. And not just me, several free software and GNU enthusiasts have also heard about "Linux", but not about GNU SLASH LINUX, which is the real OS name. Linus have already been a bit egocentric calling his kernel after his name, so let's keep and use the right name.

    Please call the OS that way and say to other people (as I am doing now) do it also. You will be helping the GNU Project as well the FSF giving them the credit they deserve. With Linux only, the final users wouldn't get anywhere since they wouldn't know what to do with that .tar.gz source file they got at kernel.org
