Will Intel Ship an x86-64bit Chip This Year?

Solid Paradox writes "According to The Register, American Technology Research predicts an x86-64-bit processor will 'soon' arrive from Intel and in another story, they also predict that Sun and IBM will be the major players in the future 64-bit boom. Meanwhile the Inquirer has a somewhat related article entitled Senior Intel PR man talks 64-bit extension talk, which follows their Pentium V will launch with 64-bit Windows Elements article that says that the chip is to be sampled internally this month."

Saabs are all turbocharged. Subaru's got a few (WRX, STi) and Mitsubishi's got the Evolution. Mazdaspeed's Protege is turbocharged. And nearly every deisel on the road is turbocharged.

Considering that the Evo and STi are two of the best performing cars available in the US right now, it may be time for you to consider changing your attitude and paying attention to what's under the hood.

Yes, but out of the two options, turbocharging is always preferable. High cylinder pressures from turbos are more tolerable with current manufacturing methods than are high rpms. They are an excellent compromise between fuel efficiency and maximum output.

Horsepower really doesn't matter, because at 7000 RPM's, your torque band is probably on a sharp decline, yet your horsepower numbers are higher because you are at a high RPM (HP = (tq * RPM)/5252). If you look at the very powerful, twin-turboed Toyota Supra, you'll see gobs of peak horsepower, but the torque band looks like a mountain. Despite having in the realm of 600-800 HP, the car runs 12's, because it makes really good power at only one point in its RPM range, and doesn't have a lot of torque. A 600-HP Mustang or Camaro will run 11's, because its torque is available throughout the RPM range.

    Hmmn?

Most 500rwhp - 500ft/lb tq cars I know of are quite capable of running on the lower side of 10s. I have seen several TT V8 stangs on a stock bottom end with auto trannies pushing low tens on street tires. (of course I am thinking rwhp as that is all I really like to use. I think flywheel HP is a gimmick).

(Not to mention TT V8 stangs can get ~24mpg@500rwhp)
