CD Copy Protection Case Goes to Court

grungie writes "From The Register: Belgian consumer watchdog Test-Achats (Test Aankoop), known for its crusade against Nokia's "unsafe batteries", starts the new year with a fresh assault on the music industry. It is taking the music giants EMI, Sony, BMG Music and Universal Music to court for installing anti-piracy systems on their audio CDs. This is excellent news! I was less than happy when I had to use cdparanoia to add The Foo Fighters' latest to my iTunes collection. I used to live in Belgium: Test Achat is serious about the protection of consumer rights. Let's hope other countries follow suit." You can read the stories in French as well as Dutch.

Regular readers of SomethingAwful will recognize these links below. I think it's fucking hilarious when the Awful Link of the Day is some poor schmucks' Xanga journal. I will seriously pee myself with laughter as the Goons troll the FUCK out of some depressed teenage AOL users' "deep thoughts". Here are two recent examples:

http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=LiL_AngeL_cUti E [WARNING: JavaScript Hell!] - This journal belonged to some Asian teenage chick who thinks it is cool to TYpE iN AlTERnAtING CAps aNd tO MIzspEEl wERdz. Also let's not forget the embededd background MIDI file (now defunct), the JavaScript to scroll the titlebar, the falling stars and, of course, the images on the front page linking back to the users' local disk drive (which have since been removed). Apparantly it took LiL_AngeL_cUtiE a few days to update her journal, and when she came back there were several hundred nasty comments from SomethingAwful followers waiting in her guestbook, not to mention the ChatterBox on the sidebar (now gone) that was abused to Hell. She folded, deleted the comments, and eventually just wiped the site. Hats off to the Goon Squad for effacing this poor user from the Internet.

http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=xpunkxjapxgurl x [WARNING: HTML color abomination!] - More recently featured as an ALoD, the diary of xpunkxjapxgurlx (who seems to be neither Japaneese nor very punk) details the sordid life of a teenage goth who's hobbies include crying, whining, bad psudeo-gothic poetry, lame personality quizzes, and inserting the letter 'x' randomly in words. Once again the Goons arrived in droves to remind this poor Xanga reader of their failure as a human being. But this time the user had the cojones to leave the comments intact (in true "I'm-depressed-and-I-don't-care" goth fashion), but not before posting a response in typical purple 48-point style about how the nation, as a whole, sucks donkey dicks. I personally wouldn't be wholly surprised if xpunkxjapxgurlx took the advice that SomethingAwful's readers left in the guestbook and slit her wrists in the tub. Hey, what's a teen goth gonna do?

That's all for today's SomethingAwful ALoD reviews. If you have any more sites that need a followup, post a link below.

Two sequential stories linking to The Register?

Tell me, why continue reading /.? It seems it's days of quality journalism are long gone... Er. Well, something like that.

Hmm. Links. Quality checked links. That was it. That or quality comments...
