Your Favorite Net.Art?
worm eater asks: "About four years ago I became interested in trying to discover art sites on the Internet. Not sites that deal with art, but sites that are art. After many hours of searching, I stumbled on a few that I enjoyed: jodi.org (although this one currently appears to just have a cool little downloadable screen-distorting program for Mac OS 9) so you might want to try, a few of these groundbreaking and sites. [Note: Beware of <BLINK> tags!] Recently, my interest in this genre of art has been reignited. What is your favorite piece of net.art?"
I just moved back to the dorm, so this may be just me, but that one site looks like it's Slashdotted or something and I can't load it. :)
.

.
Now that's what I call art!
The World Wide Web is dying. Soon, we shall have only the Internet.
I got this window with all these pop-ups and little windows moving around the screen. Screen distorting program for MacOS9 my ass. i bet it installed a bit of spyware while I was there as well.
Why does no one check what get submitted here? are there not people that get paid to do so? Is this why I have ads in my face all the time?
Check out Deviant Art
Huge art community, some of the best work I've ever seen is on this site.
Most of those links aren't art. It is a bunch of neon crap.
Just damn.
The 2nd link appears to be basically a web, with numerous links if you click on text inside the various hubs.
;)
:p )
Dunno if this counts as art, but it is as bizarre as those links: http://www.turnofftheinternet.com
I admit when I first saw the article, I had thought it was asking about favorite good art sites, was thinking about mentioning my favorite artist's site.
Although somehow I doubt the general reader would be interested in looking at a scaly (aka "herp") anthromorphic art site, which does have some..er..adult content, despite the art being very good quality imo.
Not even sure if it's allowed to post links to such a site, but if you are interested just do a google search for "Kaa Starhunter" (artist plugs Mozilla btw
how about whereismygnome? I'm not sure what the deal with it is, but they've run banner ads at yahoo and other places. If you saw the movie "Amelie", the girl (Amelie) stole her father's gnome and had friends take pictures of it all over the world. That's what it reminded me of, at least.
Do you even lift?
These aren't the 'roids you're looking for.
This should be title "Ask Slashdot: Where can I buy LSD?". Seriously, what is the asker on? I read the post at least three times and I still do not fully grasp it.
I hate sigs.
With out one of the best art sites in all of the internet. This site is for both your eyes, ears and your heart. The ending is perfect.
What, me Tweet?
If you want some really hardcore code art, check out dextro and re-move.
You'll spend hours just trying to figure out how the hell everything works. Both of these are part of turux.
Really cool stuff.

All joking aside, If we are talking Internet art (sites/computer/etc)
Couple sites I think have artistic value.
1. 3d modeling should count, and I really like skinshack the 3dmodels people design for counterstrike. It is art after all, but its the downloads not the site. I liked weapon-hacks, the 3d work was amazing, but with CS sites going down, its not up anymore.
2. As a site that looks like art, Go-l.com Looks kinda like apple.com, but the site is pure eye-candy, which is art in my eyes. (And the specs for the machines are eye-candy as well, geek think...)
Accurately described as "totally insane web experiences":
1x60.com - for the wonderfully insane images that make strong political statements (find and click on the "Enter" text on each page to advance to the next).
Ming The Merciless - In no way attempts to offend one group - nobody is spared. And if they are, it's accidental I'm sure.
For interactive Java-based art, check out some of the examples for Proce55ing (browse the exhibitions, examples and learning sections). Some of it's really cool.
I'm not sure I'd call it "art", but Weebl is manditory flash animation if you've not seen it. Superfancy.com also used to be pretty good, but I just looked and it's not there anymore (all the old content is gone).
There are more I've seen that I can't remember, I'm sure - but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Humm, also some sites that might be considered art, but its really webmasters or design firms, so they are filled with artists. (Most are flash based.)

http://www.2advanced.com/ (some really awesome flash on this site)

http://www.nakedworlddoc.com (Just visually neat)

Good collection of links at http://www.phong.com/tutorials/archive.php
Try www.goodbrush.com. Chances are, you've seen his work. Off the top of my head, I know he's done matte paintings for Forrest Gump and Final Fantasy.
Ah but does the site qualify as art itself? Well one would have to fudge the definition a bit. His opening page is one of his paintings. That changes every so often. Very interesting to see. No 'welcome to Craig Mullins site', no 'click here to enter!', just a painting.
Not sure if this is quite what the submitter was after, but I'm sure people will find the site interesting.
"Derp de derp."
Why do all of these so-called 'Net.Art' sites look like 'modern art', which is to say, they look like they were done by a 12 year old newbie making a personal webpage for the first time?
This is crap. Modern art is also crap (in some cases literally). If I wanted to see random ASCII art or bad photoshop jobs I'd go look at SomethingAwful or Fark. Not Art. It's not. I promise. Even less than the teen love ballads that Britney sings are music.
You want to see Net.Art? Check out some of the personal weblogs and websites out there. Maybe they're not the most useful or navigable things in the world, but that's not what art is supposed to be is it? There is often a lot of effort put into making them look pretty/slick/professional.
Random and weird software I've written.
After many hours of searching, I stumbled on a few that I enjoyed: jodi.org
That piece of "Net.Art" doesn't work in Mozilla/Firebird. Insightful performance piece or lazy coding? It's "art", you decide!

And, very long ago, I stumbled upon nsdap but didn't quite know what to think of it. Liked Lennongrad, though.
Maybe checkout net-art.org, it claims to be a portal to net-art...
Another plus in my book is an art site where the artist talks about their art. A few comments from the artist can give you perspective on their creation. As an example, check out this art site I came across recently by Monica Noll. Some of the most artistic parts of that site are her explinations of her drawings.

For those of you using Mozilla/Firebird, turn off the pop-up blocker and you'll see what jodi.org is about. One of the more interesting ones I was pointed to about four years ago is snarg.net. It's changed since then, but there is still a trippy flash navigation/music interface. It really takes some exploration to figure it out. And if you can't find what I'm talking about, find the # and click on it. The site used to open up a bunch of browser windows and look like it was maliciously destroying your computer (animations which showed windows dialogs about deleting the filesystem and such). Quite a trip!
As for what this post is all about, judging from jodi.org, it's asking for sites that use browser features to "perform" performance art on your desktop to make browsing an entertaining experience.

The french ministry of culture has been commissioning works of "multimedia" art for years. Several are available on their website.
This one is a little old (1999), but was the first significant one.
And here is a collection of government sponsored screensavers.

But where are the "art sites" alluded to in the main submission? I want high-resolution (as high as possible) image files of famous/classic paintings. Are there sites like this? I can't find them, except sporadically.
The paintings obviously aren't copyright controlled, and I understand that simple photographs can't be copyrighted, since they don't add anything creatively. Are museums restricting access? Where are the high resolution photographs?
Shift -a delight.

You might want to try Rhizome, which is a non-profit org for the net.art community. It's not just artists, but also curators, educators, etc. There's lots of good new media artwork on their site, beyond the usual links meantioned in the parent (most of which were created well before Slashdot even existed). Rhizome is basically what is happening today in the net.art community. And any of you budding net artists should also check out the many call for entries they post regularly. Many opportunities for funding for your project.
You'll spend hours just trying to figure out how the hell everything works.
Uh, they use flash? Why should that take hours to figure out?

You get lots and lots of cool results.
Vision Afar is a simply stunning site with some great artwork. Space/fantasy theme for the most part, but some brilliant work by Gary Tonge.
Another one of my favorites is Savinoff Design Studios which features some great lightwave 3d art.
This sorta counts, interactive, and probably made for little kids, but @ 2am under the influence of anything or not its unexplicabley hilarious. Dunno if this counts, but its funny as hell.

Parent said it better than I could have.
Relying on a dictionary to define "art" is missing the point, as said definition has been and will be debated for ages. It'd be nice if things were that simple, though.
jodi.org works fine in Mozilla, you just have popup windows completely banned. This is why I don't recommend banning all pop-up windows indiscriminantly -- many non-advertising sites still use them as a part of their basic design.
Soulbath has been around for three or four years now; lots of good grayscale fun here.

Why do all of these so-called 'Net.Art' sites look like 'modern art'...Modern art is also crap
Move along folks, don't feed the troll. Poster Cecil thinks all "Modern Art" is crap so I don't think he's going to give us a useful posting. Maybe we should ask politicians who believe that the internet only exists for child porn and financial fraud to comment on aspects of open source software?
(BTW, does parent posting take "Modern Art" to mean everything created from the beginning of 20th Century, or something different, hmmm, I am sure the term "Modern Art was coined early 1900s, somebody want to help me with this ref?).
Every legitimate pop-up I've run into (ie zoom-ins for catalogs, image galleries, word definition pop-ups) has worked without error on both Moz & Opera with their normal pop-up blocking turned on.

Those are for pops that launch as a result of links that you click. Popups that launch automatically when you visit a site will be blocked, even if they are a "ligitimate" part of the website's design (and not an ad). An example of this is my banking site uses such an automatic popup to broadcast notices. There are other sites that use this for purposes other than ads of course--you just don't know it because you never see them.
It is not meant exclusively as an art site, but its one of the most suggestive I've seen: http://www.requiemforadream.com (makes even less sense if you haven't seen the film)
Well www.somethingleet.com of course.
