Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep

DJ Phase writes "Warp Records, an independent label for electronic music (featuring artists such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada), has made their entire back catalog available thru Bleep, a new digital download service. Individual tracks are $1.35 for those of us in the USA, with EPs and full albums in the $4 to $10 price range. You can download Aphex Twin's rare, groundbreaking Hangable Auto Bulb EP for $4.29. To quote from the FAQ: 'We are at present the only store to offer very high quality MP3 files,' and 'Bleep music has no DRM or copy protection built in. We believe that most people like to be treated as customers and not potential criminals'."

The goatse page is offline after the .cx NIC revoked their domain! (No, this isn't a trick!)

    More details here.

This is, indeed, terrible news. Even if you didn't enjoy his work, Bob Goatse was truly an icon of American culture.

RIP, Bob. You will be missed. :(

I care. I even emailed the domain handler address they provided:

      To whom it concerns:

I was alarmed this evening to find that goatse.cx had had its domain shut off. The site provided a valuable service for many people, including me, and I hope you can rectify the problem.

You probably think that this site is nothing more than an unsightly stain on the pristine Sunday attire of your beloved TLD. Maybe you think that somehow Christmas Island will become associated with distended orifices purely through the continued existence of this site.

You should be PROUD to have goatse.cx as your flagship domain. The novelty of showing it around to horrified newbies wore off a long, long time ago; instead, it has become a beacon for the lost ideal of free speech on the internet. So few sites these days are able or willing to stand for this concept so proudly and vividly. They all shy away from it in the fear that, god forbid, someone should be offended.

Everyone has someone to please these days. Their ISP's, or their web hosts, or their domain name registrars, or maybe even a couple of sponsors. And they all have to please absolutely everyone at every waking moment. There's never any room for personal motives in business. So if you want to put up content with even the slightest possibility of aggravating the smallest group, someone in the chain feels threatened. All it takes is one angrily worded e-mail and you can disappear.

Then there's goatse.cx. No advertisers. No obligations. No remorse. Certainly it's a reminder of the old days of the Web, back before high bandwidth costs and the need to sell out; back when, if you wanted to say something, you just said it. Today free speech on the internet has become a rare commodity, a privilege treasured by everyone for whom it matters but seen as worthless by nearly everyone whose opinion actually means anything.

Why not make the .cx domain stand for that privilege, instead of its extermination?

(Oh, just for fun, look through all the domain names you've registered and see how many end in "se"...I'm sure they didn't all come up with that on their own.)

I guess "f**k" wouldn't have been such a good name for a music download service.

Can someone please explain to me just -why- all of these stores are US only? I'd love to buy music online, but I can't because the music stores are never in my country.

For example, I really like the iTunes music store, but all I can do is listen to the 30sec previews.. So I don't see the point in getting an iPod (I really like the hardware), since all I'm gonna do is fill it with illegal music.

  8. Howard Dean sucks by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

No matter what the results of an election today the only conclusion that can be derived is a tainted electorial process due to the one sidedness of the media. The status quo is be corrupt or lose.

It was the same out spoken liberal proponents of today that endorsed (used shamed, and singled out women) plastic surgery (yes the same people did derive an income from it). The same people who shouted a facist estrogen (yes they derived an income from that too) then quickly covered their ass when it was found to be causing cancer. I wonder where the outrage over that is, I wonder how those women are living with it (or not) now.

Howard Deans' (lol grassroots) campaign trail has more similarities to the rise of the nazi's in germany. Same propagandish type tones and strikingly similar claims (almost seems like somebody did some newpaper reading from the time (1930-1935)). Profiling his campaign up to now suggests a commercial producer who I like and admire a great deal for his abilities.

Think back to the early to mid 90's what did we have?
Students (primarily male) getting kicked out of colleges and universities hand over fist, being threatened, bullied, and intimidated. False accusations ruled the day and doing so marginalized any genuine greivence.
Spouts of school shootings (remember those) whose primary blame rest on anti-psychotic drugs (figure that one out (yes they did derive an income from that one also)) and the oppressive liberal environment which is still quite healthy and strong.
The big frauds on wall street had all florished in front of all and liberal dismissal was used to stiffle any dissent. Then hands began hitting the bottom of the cookie jar in such an unexpected manner,.. and well you know the rest is history.
Women where used as a scapegoat and bore that largest brunt of the "commercial and political" attack into our every day lives. With a little investigation you'd be surprised how many papers where written describing the same senerio (you might be even more suprised to see whose names were on those papers (yes, they did derive an income from that). The only conclusion you can come up with is intent.
The college and university push (learn how to wipe your ass properly and extended over four semeiters (yes they did derive an income from that)) as well as unrealistic industrial education standards.
The rise of the "dead beat dad" (or rather "the free meal ticket" [yes, there are better ways of doing things]). Some poor fool gets drunk at a bar, gets laid, and loses 45% of his income for the next 20 years. Or even worse doesn't know he fathered a child.
DCMA, one had washing the other.
And perhaps the biggest, the loss of our children, the only thing I'm willing to fight for.
