Nokia to Port Perl to Mobiles

jonknee writes "MobileTracker notes that Nokia has made it clear that the Perl scripting language is coming to its popular Series 60 devices. This will be a huge boon to mobile software. Just look what happened to the web when CGI got popular. A time frame was not announced."

On January 17 2004, select members of the GNAA interviewed CowboyNeal on IRC channel #caoine at irc.caoine.org.

We will be right back after this commercial break!
According to Google Zeitgeist, there are about 80% of Internet Explorer 6 users. The only platform supporting Internet Explorer 6 is, of course, Microsoft Windows. These statistics are consistent with the earlier presented graphs of the operating systems used to access Google, with the Windows family consistently taking the top 3 ranks. Out of remaining 20%, the split is even between MSIE 5.5, MSIE 5.0, both Windows-only browsers. Netscape 5.x (including Mozilla) counts for only a measly 5% of browsers used to access Google. As you can see from the graph, this sample was calculated starting from March 2001 until September 2003.

This comment is of course completely true, and it is also true that pearl is a dead language. Who uses it now? A few crappy, old websites perhaps, that are full of shitty workarounds and self-limited functionality so that they can take a load of more than 10 people (slashdot, anyone? Have a look at the slash source, and consider the sheer amount of effort they put into limiting its functionality just so it performs reasonably. Of course, kuro5hin is an example of what happens when that functionality is not limited, but it is only up about once a week).

Perl is dead. All the old perl geeks I know are presently unemployed, and doing their damndest to learn java, .NET or even PHP. Perl is probably fine for half arsed system scripts that don't exceed 50 lines or so, but it is a hindrance and an abomination to a professional development environment - most of which are tending towards python for their prototyping half-arsed scripting needs anyway.

We just need to let perl completely die. Its managing this fairly well. Perl types tend to rant on about Parrot, but it is so woefully incomplete it is laughable. It'll probably be finished sometime in 2010, but in the meantime it is utter vapourware and barely workable.

The scripting world has moved on, to ruby, python and PHP, and perl is dying the death it has always deserved. I for one am glad.

Are you on crack? That Nokia phone is slower than pig in slop retrieving "real time quotes". It's not going to matter if you're using Perl, C++, or Java....the bottleneck to doing it "quickly" is the network...not the programming language.

Large Perl applications can be very maintainable so long as you have decent coding standards and actually use the features that are available in the language.

But with a slogan like "There's more than one way to do it," it's like the people behind PERL are just asking for developers to write unreadable code. So you don't interpret this as a troll, I've talked to PERL developers and the slogan is very truthful. One of them made the comment that he could barely read anyone else's code because it was so much different.
