Freedom of Expression in Virtual Worlds
PDHoss writes "NYTimes.com has a story on freedom of expression as it applies to virtual communities, specifically 'The Sims Online.' How should issues of free speech, community standards, and censorship be addressed in the virtual world (given that we can barely agree on those issues in meatspace)?" There's also a story in the Independent, and we've mentioned this guy before.

Im a gamer, not a grammer major. This post is full of spelling and grammer mistakes.
I'm a big fan of meatspace and the rights provided me by my government (or at least the government I attempted to vote for in the last election). However, when I check into a online game, regardless if it is a first person shooter or cooperative environment, I make no illusions that the rules that govern my life will be (or should be) transferred to a place I'm taking a "time out" in.
Maybe I'm a pimp in The Sims Online because that's how I relax. I'm looking forward to the bloodbath if Grand Theft Auto goes massively multiplayer. (Imagine: I was kicked out because I was auctioning off GTA armor piercing bullets on E-Bay! No fair! Restraint of trade!)
particularly once you consider that not only is slashdot privately owned, but it has paying customers to consider as well.
Even more amusing is the fact that michael posted this article, an editor known for modbombing threads and ruining accounts of those who criticize him. He is the most unpopular editor on Slashdot. I guess Slashdot is its own little virtual world, in a way. Anybody have any articles written about the cultures of Slashdot, from karma whores to trolls to secretive editors?

someday I hope others will to. I feel so sorry for waitresses I myself have never been a waitress but I do feel that they are poorly mistreated. to get tips they must flirt and carry on stupidly, so they get accused of being sluts. if they stare blankly and do their jobs you assume they are mental patients with no life except to wait on you.
I feel sorry for suv drivers who constantly get smacked around because they are so much more better and richer than everyone. I'm just waiting til they make one that I can afford.
I feel sorry for stay at home soccer moms who live for their kids but as they do so their children take total advantage and learn to manipulate so young.
I feel sorry for the spoiled 20 somethings with college degrees wasteing their lives away for a good time. they'll never know the work it takes to breathe.
I feel sorry for people who judge other by race, creed, sexuality or size. social tolerance is a quality many lack.
I feel sorry for the people who make it a point for the rest of their lives how much everyone hates them for being differant but never understanding hate isnt replaced by more hate. hold your head up but dont slam everyone with the knowledge of your race, creed, sexuality and size.
I feel sorry for the people who speed through life to get countless tickets and slam into brick walls and never learn how precious life really is.
But I have faith that some day everyone will come to an understanding that people are people theres no need to scream and shout just breathe and accept who you are accept who they are and dont make such a big fuss.

buffy used to be my fav show on tv but now its starting to suck cause of all
the niggers. there used to be no niggers on buffy but now the producers moved
it to college n now we got niggers all over the place like in the initiaive n
stuff. yea i know buffy had a nigger vampire on it last year but fate staked
that nigger scum n killed his gay nigger ass! but now we got this nigger forest
n the producers make him look all kewl n stuff when he isn't! well theres still
hope cause the producers could the nigger off pretty easily. i also got to
admit that buffy has far less niggers than some other shows that i watch. i
mean voyager used to be cool but then it got so many niggers. there are too
many niggers on voyager. star trek is really starting to suck n become star
drek. we used to have kewl white characers like kirk n pikard n wesley crusher
(he's my fav!) on star trek, but now we have stupid gay niggers like tuvoc n
elena on voyager! i think the producers should kill those nigger fags n bring
back some pure white blood like wesley and lieutenant carey. oh well, its
wishful thinking, since the producers are such nigger lovers. at least voyager
still has some kewl characters like janeway and naomi wildman n neelix. voyager
is still better than that fuckin gay deep space nine show with the nigger
captain and his nigger annoyin-as-hell son. i read some buffy spoilers though n
it looks like my fav characters zander n jiles r getting more screen time, so
thats kewl, so im not going to quit watching buffy like im going to quit
watching voyager. but u know i heard that kes is coming back to voyager n is
going to kill that nigger bitch elana so im going to watch to see that. but
after that im gone
