Intel to Increase Stages in Prescott

Alizarin Erythrosin writes "Further contributing to the MHz Myth, The Register and ZDNet are reporting that the new P4 core, codenamed Prescott, will have a longer pipeline then Northwood. No official numbers have been released, but The Reg is saying an Intel spokesman said that 30 stages seems to be a reasonable estimate. As most of us know, a longer pipeline can lead to slowdowns in the form of branch mispredictions and pipeline stalls. 'And just as the PIII proved faster than the early P4s in some applications, it's likely that Northwood will similarly prove faster than Prescott, which has clearly been designed for speeds of the order of 4GHz.'"

Yep, Intel's really blown it. They only turn over billions of dollars and actually make a profit, they have huge cash reserves and have by far the largest shares of their main markets.

But dammit, AMD makes a good CPU, right?

Clearly P4EE is based on 32-bit. Just as clearly, even with its 64-bit internals, Athlon-64 FX still can't outperform the 32-bit processor. Moreover, as noted earlier, on geek.com, if you except Linux, there is no 64-bit OS so you are really only getting an Athlon-32 FX with a promise that someday it will run 32-bits. With any luck that'll be in '04, however, don't hold your breath that all the .DLLs will be ported, so your 64-bit processor and 64-bit OS will still thrash in 32-bit mode changes for a good long while.
