Intel to Increase Stages in Prescott

No official numbers have been released, but The Reg is saying an Intel spokesman said that 30 stages seems to be a reasonable estimate. As most of us know, a longer pipeline can lead to slowdowns in the form of branch mispredictions and pipeline stalls. 'And just as the PIII proved faster than the early P4s in some applications, it's likely that Northwood will similarly prove faster than Prescott, which has clearly been designed for speeds of the order of 4GHz.'"

The latest in a long history of failures, the Linux operating system has flushed half of a US$820 million project out of the crapper hole on the side of the space shuttle. It seems that somebody came up with the bright idea of running the Mars rover on an Apple Macintosh "Supercomputer" controlled by Linux.
Oh, I suppose that that extra license fee for an actual quality operating system would have broken that $410M dollar budget. There's no way they could have afforded an embedded operating system that isn't cheap communist software. They could have gone with QNX RTOS, VxWorks or any number of other quality and time-tested real-time operating systems for the Mars rover, from a reputable company. But NOOOOO, they went with bullshit free-as-in-fix-everything-yourself Linux. Some long-haired balding fat Linux zealot, sucking up oodles of tax money with his blob-like presence in the NASA "engineering corps", with a certain penchant for cheap software, came up with the brilliant idea of running embedded Linux on an Apple Macintosh of all things. Of all the idiotic things that have happened under the current administration, this by far makes me most ashamed.

I believe I also heard it got postponed/cancelled when it was determined that there was nowhere near as much oil in the region of the Caucasus Mts. it was supposed to serve (all those southern ex-Soviet Republics) compared to what was predicted by the initial oil deposit estimates.
You must not have heard about that, which isn't surprising since the Chomskyite lunatic community isn't big on announcing corrections. After all, being a conspiracy nut means never having to say you're sorry.

I don't have a citation, but other nations have confirmed that plans to invade or otherwise intimidate (with military force) Afghanistan existed by summer of 2001 -- well before the terrorist attack that provided a palatable reason to the American public.

a trans-afghan pipeline has been encouraged by the us for years preceding the latest invasion of the country. it may never be built, but it is still being pushed by the US. There has been news trickling in fairly steadily in the past two months about this. eg from times of india jan 12
the kazakhs HAVE a good deal of oil/gas - it needs to get south and west. maybe you're referring to the BTC pipeline project that replaced the first trans-afghan pipeline plan.
the idea put forth by the "conspiracy nuts" is that the US had an interest in occupying the region because their presence means they can fund and participate in the installation of new export infrastructure (like the BTC, in which US-based Unocal is involved). The war in Afghanistan meant bases in neighboring countries like Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan, which allows for a permanent regional presence.
it doesn't really matter where the pipeline runs -the US couldn't have participated as easily if it hadn't established a presence.

Look, it's over two years later, there's no pipeline. There might be a different pipeline someday? Well, that's a win-win scenario, isn't it?
