Apache License Updated to 2.0
Roy_Fielding writes "The Apache Software Foundation has approved an update
to the open source
Apache License (Version 2.0) that will be mandated across all Apache projects
starting on March 1st.
I have been working on variations of this
license for the past three years, trying to
balance the many different goals of the revision. That includes making the license easier for
non-ASF projects to use, improving compatibility
with GPL-based software, allowing the license
to be included by reference instead of listed
in every file, clarifying the license on contributions, and requiring a patent license on contributions that necessarily
infringe a contributor's own patents.
The result is a license that is compatible with other open source
licenses, such as the GPL, and yet still remains true to the original
goals of the Apache Group and supportive of collaborative development
across both nonprofit and commercial organizations." While it has yet to become OSI-certified, it will probably will be so Real Soon Now, and in the meantime it's fun to compare licenses.
I know this is offtopic, and as such should be moderated in accordance with the Trolling Licencing Agreement, but there is a question.
Why is there even an apache section on Slashdot anymore. Its DEADER than BSD is. The last update was on the 20th Novembre 2003. There are far more topics that could to with a Dedicated section, but the Apache is just a waste of space, with a colour schem e that is awful.
Well, there goes another license into complete mess because of the GPL.
The compatibility with the GPL is a complete non-issue, so why even bother. If the GNU zealots don't like the v1.0, they can write their own software and release it under the GPL instead of polluting the air for the rest of us by the changes in v2.0.
I like some of the changes, but really, this GPL compatiblity shit that keeps fucking with every non-GPL software these days is really annoying.
Provide a link to the Slashdot story?

No, you're just trolling, I don't believe a word of what you're saying. Go away!
So what you are saying is GPL is best except in the case of your software when a dual license is best?
Please make up your fscking mind.
