FreeBSD 5.2 Review

JigSaw writes "OSNews published a review of FreeBSD 5.2. They found the OS very solid as a server but pretty lacking as a desktop. The author finds FreeBSD very fast overall, easy to configure and that it feels integrated and mature. On the other hand, it has limited modern hardware support, small annoyances at places and that not many binary packages are available and so compilations from ports may take long time."

It is now official - New Hampshire voters have confirmed: The Howard Dean campaign is dying

Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Howard Dean campaign when a recent primary confirmed that Howard Dean accounts for less than a fraction of 15 percent of all voters. Coming on the heels of the latest Iowa caucus which plainly states that the Howard Dean campaign has lost more vote share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. The Howard Dean campaign is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead second in the recent New Hampshire primary.

You don't need to be a Bill Schneider to predict the Howard Dean campaign's future. The hand writing is on the wall: the Howard Dean campaign faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for the Howard Dean campaign because the Howard Dean campaign is dying. Things are looking very bad for the Howard Dean campaign. As many of us are already aware, the Howard Dean campaign continues to lose vote share. Angry, lunatic rants flow like a river. Howard Dean's voice is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its volume due to his apish shreiks. The sudden and unpleasant departure of long time campaign contributor George Soros only serves to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: the Howard Dean campaign is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Polling leader Zogby states that 38% of democrats support John Kerry. How many supporters of John Edwards are there? Let's see. The number of John Kerry versus John Edwards posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 19 to 16. Therefore about 32% of democrats support John Edwards. John Edwards posts on Usenet are about twice the volume of Wesley Clark posts. Therefore about 16% of democrats support Wesley Clark. A recent primary put Joe Lieberman at about 11% of democrat voters. Therefore about 1.00 - (.38 + .32 + .16 + .11) = 3% of democrats support Howard Dean. This is consistent with the number of Howard Dean votes in Iowa.

Due to the troubles of Howard Dean, temper tantrums and so on, Howard Dean's voters went to other candidates and were taken over by Dick Gephardt who sells another failed tax-and-spend philosophy. Now the Dick Gephardt campaign is also dead, its voters turned over to even less desirable candidates.

All major surveys show that the Howard Dean campaign has steadily declined in vote share. The Howard Dean campaign is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If the Howard Dean campaign is to survive at all it will be among far left peaceniks. The Howard Dean campaign continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, the Howard Dean campaign is dead.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

OpenBSD leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the *BSD market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeBSD went out of business and was taken over by BSDI who sell another troubled OS. Now BSDI is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

BSD and the BSD mentality are what drove Unix to the very brink of extinction before Linux came along to revive it. You see, normal people hate Unix. They want to take what is good and turn it into a better OS.

Like all other BSDs, FreeBSD lacks any ambition to improve, and as such it will never be more than a fringe OS. It rocks noone's pants other than that of the macabre subculture it caters to.

  13. TRY NOT TO YAWN by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Troll

You should most definately TRY NOT TO YAWN !

See, yawning is by far the most advanced variation of the THINK ABOUT YOUR BREATHING troll. Why? Well, you may have noticed that yawns can spread among species, just from watching each other yawn. Yawns are truly infectious. And trying to stop yourself from yawning is senseless and can be painful. Save yourself the frustration of trying not to yawn. Looking for more information on why we yawn?

The most plausible explanation, and the one that is taught in medical school, is that we yawn because oxygen levels in our lungs are low.

The truth is that we don't completely understand why people, or animals for that matter, yawn. It's widely assumed that yawning occurs because we are tired or bored or because we see someone else doing it, but there isn't any hard evidence to support these beliefs.

The most plausible explanation, and the one that is taught in medical school, is that we yawn because oxygen levels in our lungs are low. Studies have shown that during normal, at-rest breathing, we don't use anywhere near our lung capacity; for the most part, we just use the air sacs at the bottom of the lungs. If the air sacs, called alveoli, don't get fresh air, they partially collapse and the lungs stiffen a bit. As a result, it's believed, our brain prompts the body to either sigh or take a yawn to get more air into the lungs.

But certain aspects of yawning remain even more mysterious. Fetuses, for instances, have been observed yawning in the womb, yet it's known that they don't take oxygen in through their lungs. And yawning seems to be a symptom of multiple sclerosis and other medical conditions, for reasons unclear.

Another puzzling phenomenon is that some male animals, men included, yawn in association with penile erection (although it's presumptuous to assume they're bored with their sex lives).
