Own a Piece of An Apple-Based Supercomputer

Graff writes "Now that Apple has come out with the Xserve G5, Virginia Tech has been swapping out parts of their 'System X' supercomputer for the more compact 1U Xserves. MacMall is selling some of those System X component G5 systems with an approximate $200 savings and an extra 512 megs of RAM over a normal G5. You can read more about it at MacCentral."

I could use dual 64bit PPC rackmount boxes, but I want to run linux god damn it! Why do they have to sell these with OSX, what possible fucking advantage is Aqua going to provide when I ssh in to patch something? What is the point of paying for (32bit) OSX on a machine stuffed in a 19" rack with 60 others exactly like it? Looks like the dual X86-64 box after all...

oh please don't mind the mac fanatics, even if you point out that rack units practically never need a desktop OS they will still insist apple can do no wrong. That macs would be cheaper if apple supplied rack without OS will never dawn on them.

yeah sounds like a real good reason, "we need to hurry this buying decision because umm.. we really want to look cool on this top list here!". not.
