Mandrake Blocked By XFree86 4.4 License
Linzer writes "A mailing-list message posted by Mandrake Linux's main developer on the Cooker mailing-list states that the development version of the distro is about to revert from XFree86 4.4 to the 4.3 version because of XFree86's recent license change. Mandrake contributors have started asking for justifications from MdkSoft. Many point out features of XF86 4.4 [an 'an open source X11-based desktop infrastructure'] they can't live without, including support for some not so uncommon hardware.
A later Cooker mailing-list post extends a bit on the reasons."
We can do this elsewhere, too. Microsoft, come on and force all XP users to upgrade to 95. Apple users can now upgrade to the Lisa OS.
IF this keeps up, *BSD users might actually be made to upgrade to a version that is alive.
you fucking pile of fuck. (op me)
How about we put all unfunny people like you on trains and send them off into camps? It's not big deal. Simple solution.
They probably said Ayons le sexe avec ces fils des chevres sans mere!.
Send your friends messages of love at fuck-you.org
stfu you steaming pile of dog turd. if i ever meet you in person, i'm gonna show you some creative use of a soldering iron.
jeebuz if this isn't the most pathetic piece of crap post i've ever seen in this fucking excuse for a website. copy one of the messages in the thread and post it as your own, that's fantastic. what, for a few fucking worthless "karma" points? you should be taken out and shot.
It's called sarcasm, dipshit. Clearly there is no off position for the genius switch on your brain.
Not...
Mandrake sells a "Linux" OS. That's what they have on the box...
But, in reality, it should be an "XFree86" OS. That happens to run on Linux...
Or... XFree86/GNU/OpenOffice/Linux.
In terms of importance, I think that the XFree86 component is MORE vital to Mandrake than Linux (right now). It is easier to replace the kernel than to replace the X Server.
And the X folk are demanding some recognition...
Suck it up, and give it to them. There was a time when running "Linux" did not mean a GUI. A lot of uses STILL don't need a GUI. But most (RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE) compete with the GUI.
So give it up to the X folk... Put it on that package. Yes, even at this late date.

Woo, seems like I've pissed off 3 MCSE dog-fuckers with that comment (so far)
It's a bit early to draw conclusions but if all the distros will drop it one by one, it's just what will happen. I'll theink we'll be better off with the alternatives (Xouvert & the X server at freedesktop.org) anyway.
...typical n00b with no understanding or respect for a team that did as much as Linus and RMS for the advancement of free operating systems.
It's way too early, kid. (I'm sure that's what you are if you already think we'd be better off with a replacement that doesn't even exist)
What crack are you smoking?
There's nothing to stop you from using non-GPL software with GPL software.
For example, you can run non-GPL drivers like Nvidia's graphics drivers on XFree86 on the GPL'ed GNU/Linux OS. No problems.
Similarly, you can run the GPL'ed GIMP on the (very) non-GPL Windows OS. No problems.
What makes you think you couldn't run KDE or Qt on this new XFree86?
Is there a clause in the new XFree86 licence whch states that "You may not run any GPL software in conjunction with this XFree86 licenced software"??
Come on, moderators, why mod this hogwash as "Informative" when it's clearly crap?

(1) Including the new text in every place it "should" go is a lot of work
This is complete bullshit. GPL software requires that you ship copyright notices in the places they "should" go, and you also ship a copy of the licence.
Mandrake already basically fulfills the XFree requirements for EVERY SINGLE PACKAGE THEY SHIP! So the argument that this is way too much work is pure baloney. They do it every day.
This is some "With Us Or Against Us" hissy fight between XFree and FSF. End user distros like Mandrake should just butt the fuck out.
I don't mind Grammar Nazis, but if you're going to do it, do it the right way.
Observe:
The word "English" is supposed to be capitalized, and a grammatically correct sentence would be written like "learn to use English properly, dipshit," dipshit.
evil adrian
and?
:p
big bloody deal, i can put up with a little smearing, so take your trademark and stick it up your arse.
no pun intended
oh, and i didn't notice you mention an alternative to good ole xfree.
...these aren't my real teeth.
A 402MB installation of Windows XP doesn't come with NEARLY as much as a 1200MB install of RedHat. Let's add it up:
WinXP: 402MB, 1CD
OXP: 2-300MB, 1-3CDs
Various games: ~500MB, ~5CDs
Server software: ~1GB, ~5CDs
PhotoShop: ???
RedHat (and others): 1000-1500MB, 3CDs
OOo: Included in distro
Games: Included in distro
Server software: Included
GIMP: Included
Hmm... which does better in THIS comparison?
