Unofficial X-Com Inspired Remake Gets Demo

Sacrusha writes "The developers of UFO: Alien Invasion finally released a technical demo for both Windows and Linux, using a modified Quake 2 engine to feature turn-based tactical combat against alien forces on three different maps, in both single and multiplayer modes! UFO: AI is going to be a totally free, fan-made game and is heavily inspired by Microprose's X-Com series - the developers are looking for your input on the product."

I was with you until you started rambling about multiplayer. I don't believe that multiplayer needs to be in every game. Some games don't need them and this is one of them (another good example is Civ - dispite the fact they went ahead and did it anyway). Some games are single player games and should stay that way. Some games are turn based and they work best this way.

This is free software; it doesn't need to compete. It must be acceptable since you're not paying anything for it!

it's a throw-back to older games. it used to be that virtually any multiplayer game was play-by-game, which itself was a throw-back to chess played by snail mail, a practice which is probably around a hundred years old, if not older.

it's not great for things that require a lot of action, but for stuff that's more strategic and requires you to think about each command thoroughly, it works well enough and the system requirements for any game that uses it are pretty low, openning them up for just about anyone.

Glad to see this project coming along nicely.
