Toward a New Kind of Linux Distribution

An anonymous reader writes "Progeny co-founder Ian Murdock wrote a weblog entry that has been reprinted at Newsforge. He talks about how current distros are built from the top down, making a 'one-size-fits-all' solution of technology. He proposes making a modular solution that encompasses building modules so distros can include only the technology they need to suit their purpose, kinda like building from the bottom up. Interesting read, good arguments, potential for a new Linux community."

      Care to explain how AmigaOS is now at 4.0 while they've "never released an update ever again"?. to my mind that's at least 3 major revisions of the OS after the first. There were many in between also

    • KDE 3.2
    • Easy to Install
    Mandrake 10.0 seems to fit that criteria, but its still in beta. Does anyone know any others?

    Actually, the article did remind me of something I wanted to say here: UserLinux and KDE. The KDE devotees have thoroughly disgraced themselves with their behaviour over this, and previous issues. Apparently, they are completely unable to behave in a professional manners, and instead resort of mindless flaming of anyone who doesn't think KDE has a destiny to rule the Linux desktop. They've done this to Red Hat and Sun before now -- anything those two companies do is immediately the work of the devil is KDE advocates' eyes -- and now they are doing the same thing to Bruce Perens... posting character assination and lies every time he speaks out.

    KDE advocates (and some of them are developers) are a disgrace to the Linux community. Either the KDE developers grow up and start cracking down on this kind of behaviour, or they will find themselves even more marginalised and irrelevant to the commericial world than they already are.
