Kodak Sues Sony Over Digital Camera Patents

KenC writes "Kodak has filed a lawsuit against Sony alleging that 10 of its patents have been used without permission. Included among the patents as reported via Reuters is electronic camera utilizing image compression and digital storage . Kodak claim the patents involved were issued between 1987 and 2003. More from Bloomberg." As reader Nekura2025 asks "Um, doesn't that apply to all digital cameras?"

Three years ago next month I first discovered Linux and the Open Source Revolution. What a time it's been.

Back then, Red Hat 7.1 had just been released, the 2.4 kernel series was brand new (and the cautious were still using 2.2) and Gnome was rocking the world with their 1.4 release. Everybody used Netscape 4.x back then; Mozilla was largely considered a joke and an embarassment to "the movement". Try downloading some of the old releases (like M18 or 0.6) from archive.mozilla.org to see what it was like.

I remember struggling for months to figure out how to get email off my dialup ISP's server, and even longer trying to successfully send messages. I remember being emotionally scarred by the sendmail man pages, and despondantly accepting that I was never going to get it straightened out. Eventually I sent my first successful message via a badly misconfigured qmail setup that somehow managed to work anyway.

    How has everything progressed?

    * I haven't authored a single open source project, nor have I contributed any code to any existing ones. The promise of everybody's-welcome, egalitarian community and instant fame and fortune for OSS pioneers is a myth. If you have even the tiniest semblence of a social life or enjoy any non-computer-related activities, you will not be able to put in the time to get anything meaningful done. If you like to have sex on a semi-regular basis, this should already be obvious.
    * I've only submitted a handful of bug reports over the years, and I only remember having one come to any kind of meaningful resolution (about six months too late).
    * I still can't get high quality hardware-accelerated graphics, despite there being an open source driver (developed 7-8 months after the board went on the market), because most distributions refuse to include the latest XFree86.
    * I still can't play video clips on cnn.com or pbs.org or pretty much anywhere else, despite there being not one but TWO high quality players that support the formats.
    * I still have to know what an MTA is, where to get it and how to use it to receive and send email. Evolution sucks and Balsa still does.
    * I still have to consult arcane hardware compatibility lists before I buy anything, and spend hours finding, downloading, installing and testing software to work with the new hardware.
    * To do any kind of decent quality print layout, I have to find and install pirated copies of VMware, Windows and Adobe InDesign. Scribus sucks (although they get points for effort).

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?
