BitTorrent Gains Corporate Support
BitWarrior writes "Recently today it was revealed that Blizzard, the creator of many legendary games such as the Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft franchises, will be using BitTorrent to distribute their Beta release of their latest game, World of Warcraft. BitTorrent is becoming a hit among companies required to distribute large quantities of data to their customers. Valve also jumped on the BitTorrent bandwagon last month(NYTimes, first born required, blah blah), hiring its creator, Bram Cohen. The one downside to Blizzards move is that BitTorrent has been added to many Universities black lists of clients to allow through their networks. Will the recent acceptance by such reputable companies open the possibility to Universities that not all P2P distribution is inherently bad?"
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you cat fanatics? I've been sitting here on my sofa in front of a cat (a sealpoint siamese) for about 20 minutes now while attempting to get it's attention away from a bug on the floor. 20 minutes. At home, with my labrador cross, which by all standards should be a lot dumber than this cat, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this attention seeking attempt, my children's attention is also held by the cat. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even trying to get the remote from my partner fails.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while dealing with other cats, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a cat that fetches as much as it's canine counterpart, despite the cat's faster ambulatory system. My terrier with one ingrown toenail runs consistently faster than this siamese at times, as the cat is often completely asleep. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the cat is a superior animal.
Cat addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a cat over other faster, cheaper, more affectionate animals.
Waste of a first post. However, will the distribution of the beta on bitorrent encourage or discourage the "borrowing" of the important bits of the software?
The B.netD legal fiasco began with the unofficial Warcraft 3 beta "test."
Can WoW as a *considerably more difficult to steal* MMORPG last through the attentions of hard-up hacker-gamers everywhere?

If 99% of the use of an ftp client was to dl warez...
It isn't?
My peenix itches. should I install loonix? or should i just pay my licensing fee?
We then into copying DVDs. At the most abstract sense, an argument can be made to copy a DVD for personal use. For instance, I might put the DVD on the computer so my child can choose and watch movies. This saves wear and tear on the DVD and also helps me track and limit the available content. But at a very basic level it is a fallacy to say that we can't copy a DVD. This assume that every DVD contains licensed content for which we do not have proper rights. This is what the corporations wants to believe so they can charge a royalty for every blank DVD. However, it is very possible that we have created the content on the DVD, and therefore should owe no one for the content, and have the all rights to do anything with the content. For instance most of the writable CDs I own contain either personal or duly licensed content. Again, it is a licensing issue, combined with whatever interpretation of fair use you may favor.
People say that the children are getting stupider. I believe that the children are just as smart, but the Adults are confusing them through the sloppy use of language, although sometimes, as in this case, it is the purposefully deceitful use of the languages. In either case the child will form wildly inaccurate perceptions of reality as he or she tries to integrate the incorrect data into a schema, the damage of which is immeasurable. See the letters in the current issue of Physics Today.
I know this'll be marked -1, flame or offtopic, but I've seriously NEVER understood...
What's up with the whole "NY Times registration" hated? Who cares? So you register a fake yahoo email once. What's the big deal? You get (arguably) the most respected newspaper in the world EVERYDAY... for FREE... and it "costs" you the price of telling them your (fake, if you prefer) name. What's with all the whiney bitches?
Hopefully, someone is reading this at -1 so I can finally find out the answer...
Trough all ages there has always been some people in power and their subordinates. The only thing that has really changed is what means that gives power.
First there was resources. Things like food and shelter.
As humans progressed, the ability to manipulate resources gave new advantages to those who mastered these skills. The knowledge of these skills now gave power.
As this knowledge became more and more common, the power these abilties gave lessened. However being efficient and qualified turned more important as we all know, because quantity and quality counts.
If everyone was able to make weapons, the ones who could create most and (not least) better weapons, could assemble a bigger and more deadly army. Thus more power.
One thing that hasn't changed though, is that anything that threatens the current power will be fought with all means available.
Today many of these things (and many more) give power, however the dominant one seems to be money. And those in charge are scared shitless of anything free. The more things which are available without a price, the more their power is lessened.
And as we can see, the powers of today are fighting with every (legal) resource they can find.
If the ideals of a "free" world should ever be realized, today's powerstructures would collapse. This would open up for creative people to be the new "power", and then by "power" i mean those who are able to steer the directions the development of society would take.
And creativy can not be inhereted, delegated or controlled. This creative "power" would have to be earned and deserved.
Guess who doesn't like that, folks? Guess who will fight that?
Oh, stupid me, I forgot. They're allready doing that. The only thing which is yet to tell, are who's going to win this battle.
