Project Gutenberg 2 Raises Some Hackles

An anonymous reader writes "LISNews.com reports on a new web venture called Project Gutenberg 2, offering access to electronic books in Adobe eBook format on a paid membership basis. Some Gutenberg volunteers are concerned about the use of the PG name in such a context. The news raises questions about PG's ongoing commitment to the ideals of free distribution and nonproprietary formats. Last year PG celebrated the release of its 10,000th title, accomplished with the help of many volunteer proofreaders, many of whom aren't happy about charging people to view these titles in Adobe eBook format."

There's no need to charge an additional fee to get the books in a PDF form. There are plenty of free open source utilities to write out PDF documents. While I appreciate the service PG provides, I don't think they have a good reason to charge for providing the e-books in PDF. Just my two cents.

You could always wipe that nasty os off the ipaq and reflash it with familiar which DOES have a ebook reader. This has other benefits too.

I have to say as person that has to use Adobe products, I rank them up with Microsoft as far as crushing the competition, However, I have to give Microsoft a kudo for restrant compared to Abobe.

    Talk about drastic DRM measures.
